How's. I have been seeking a Capped Bust Expert for a discovery I am trying to identify. If you have anything you could suggest as far as being able to i.d. this edge lettering mishap, please comment. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Fifty cents or half a dollar. The "or" is minted upon "Half". There is another issue as this 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar received damage from the lettering machine as the silver lookes disturbed on the edge. I locked this coin back up in my safe deposit box so I cannot give more photos.

    Thanks again,

    M.S.

That's a very lovely coin, and a neat edge error. Those aren't terribly uncommon, but I believe they can be worth some premium. I'll have to defer to the specialists to give you any solid information on that.

Common errors on the Half dollars.
The only ones with a small premium are those that have been put thru the Castaing machine twice, and even those are a small premium.
I am one of the very few who collect doubled edge lettering, in fact, probably the only one. :)

Great timing. I thought you might jump in here. Does the edge lettering ever decide the Overton #?

I really appreciate the input everybody thank you. It is a really beautiful queen and at least this air doesn't effective visual appreciation one could have for this coin, hopefully it help me sell it faster. I can't really see Adam too much more value to the coin though. To answer the Overton question I see nothing of the sort when it comes to Overton attribution. I could be wrong but it's not in my book.

    Thanks again,

I hope this helps to answer a few questions.
I am going to post for you and others a link to an old thread written years avo by bonedigger on edge lettering. It also has an image with the mnown edge lettering errors listed.

My bad the thread is not by bonedigger but a reply to a thread July 28 2008
Capped bust half dollar edge lettering
Bonedigger did a nice reply and include this image of known edge errors

A tip on getting an good rim image

A deck of cards works well or a stack of 2x2's rubber banded together.
Incert the coin inbetween the cards or 2x2's the thickness of the stack should stand up so you can steady the ca era to take the shot.
Rotate the coin so you can image the edge all the way around.
