Here are a few dimes produced by the US Mint in recent years that I think are POOR QUALITY. Bud is not impressed with them either
I wouldn’t exaclty call the 80’s recent. And after 30+ years knocking around in circulation, I wouldn’t expect MS examples. Might there have been some small minting errors? Maybe. Is it indicative of their overall performance? Not in the slightest.
I usually find the dimes to be minted fairly sharp. It’s the cents that I find are generally the lowest quality. I search through a lot of cents so that could be my bias but the coins in the photos are not new enough to throw shade at the Mint.
You are right, Bud had me convinced that the dimes were not all that good...we are about to have a talk about that...
I tend to agree about the dime over the last 30+ years. I too have and have seen many since the 80's until now (especially 2015 & 16) where the mint has used the dies way past their prime. But since most are produced for spending and not collecting, the quality percentage is probably well within their acceptable levels if there is such a thing?
The 80's were fairly recent for some of us.... That said, the 1988 quite clearly shows severe die deterioration, which certainly cannot be attributed to circulation. Unfortunately, this along with low quality coins in general was pretty the norm at that time, and those shown are indeed indicative of what one should expect to find if searching for them. Not all, of course, but generally speaking.

True! I picked those out because of their poor quality, I have a few from the 1940-50s that have good detail. The 1970s and 1980s have sharp details on the reverse and the obverse is the poor quality of most of the DIMES that I have. It looks as though something was going on with the metal on the obverse that cause the imperfections, but I have no idea what the real cause is or was. Thanks for your comments...
