Some coins showed MD on parts of the legends, but in most cases it was just the MM that looked this way.

Surgeprotector Machine Doubling....gets me every time!

Ah..that was the most confusing part for me. In the images i found on the internet all of the 99's had it everywhere so i thought it was strange that this one had it on only the mint mark

So, here is an update. Since there seemed to be confusion regarding the mint mark being doubled (Notice I used the "d", small victories for newbies) I went ahead and took the coin to my local coin dealer to see what he thought. He believes it might be doubled but wanted me to leave it there to have others look at it. He also, noticed something I didn't... the coin has a rotated die error and he said it might have contributed to the doubled die. He said I should send it in to get verified and graded but I'm not sure it would be worth it. He then offered me $5 for it which i thought was weird...anyhow, what say you all now with the update and pictures 1999-Jeferson-Nickel-Rotated-Die.jpg ?

Surge, here's the problems I see with it (caveat: I am a Jeff collector but not a specialist).

    1. If that's the actual amount of rotation in the pic, then it's not rotated enough to be worth a premium. :)
    2. It's an ugly coin, been in too many battles (looks like Sherman attacked Monticello - wouldn't that be funny!) :jawdrop:
    3. It's a 1999 (it's only 19 yrs old, what if it were a teen in high school, what would you think of it?)

I would not send it in anywhere, but I would go running at full speed to see if he is still good on his $5 offer. :hilarious::smug:

    1. It is the actual amount of rotation.
    2. Its ugly but pretty inside (Kudos on the Sherman reference)
    3. 1999 was a good party year

I actually don't want to sell it. I want to keep them (even the poor ugly ones with MD) as I will use it as a learning tool. My main thing is classifying them and what to write about it. Im not looking into being a seller but a true collector.

Yeah, I understand the curtains & chandeliers are something to behold  (Sorry, I really could not resist. One day I hope to visit the real thing - ironically we did stop by about 30 yrs ago, but it was closed!!! :cyclops:)

PlanoSteve has it, pretty much, au55 is stretching it grade wise what with the reverse, CMs and flattened legends. Still no confirmation on DD or not, hang on for a while longer but...

...'99-P with DD at au55 value maybe $5.00 or so to your dealer friend.

...'99-P with RPM at au55 value maybe $.75 to an avid fan of rpms.

...'99-P with die deterioration at au55 value a solid 5 cents.

It depends on what you define what's going on with the mint mark.
