I was looking through a box of dimes and came across one that was discolored and had an odd piece of metal hanging off the side of it. I would have assumed that it was mistreated and was just damaged while being circulated, however, the entire box of dimes it came from were 2017 D. And all in pristine condition. Anyone have any idea what might have caused this? 20180325_221519.jpg 20180325_221445.jpg

    Welcome to CT!!

It is hard to say what is going on with these photos. I would suggest you take the photos straight on instead of at an angle and then crop photos to just the coin(s) before posting.

    I have a 2017 just like that and I assume it's toning.

Look at the rim . should be normal, or original looking ( clad & copper ) .
When the coin get struck, the improper annealing will be removed .

The extra metal is clearly damage. The rim in that area looks as if it was scraped against something rough.

Awesome suggestion! I have taken a couple more photos. These were taken in normal light and really show the brown color of the dime. 20180326_110013.jpg 20180326_105944.jpg 20180326_110013.jpg 20180326_105944.jpg

I totally agree! It's interesting that it was mixed in the box of seemingly uncirculated 2017 Ds. I'm wondering if the damage occurred at the mint (not that it matters, I suppose).

It most likely occurred at the place it was rolled for distribution, Exposing the underlying metal is what most likely caused the toning on your coin. I can not say for sure that it isn't a "Black Beauty" either.
