Hi.still fairly new at this is it possible or has anyone heard of mint mark s stamped over d all coins in my 1979 proof coins set looks that way please let me know your thoughts.Thankyou. A yes i still dont know how to post pics
Based on the pics you provided they appear to be filled in MM which is common, it's kind of hard to tell from those pics.IMO Dave
No reason for them to be S over D. As they are made in SF with specially prepared dies and blanks. They would have to use common coins that were first produced in Denver to have a D on the coin before the S was put over it. I can't see anything but the SBA mm and that looks normal.
They had some trouble getting a decent mint mark in 1979. Some of the marks were filled in and distorted in some way. The ones that you would like to find are the sets with a clear S on the coins , those are valued quite a bit higher then the Type 1 minted coins . This is what you have a Type 1 .
You have the type 1 filled S...known as the BLOB S...the most common type...the type 2 S is well defined and the rarer of the two types.
And then on the 1981 SBA the Types are reversed. And the type 1 is desirable. I think they used the same S from the 1979 Type 2, as the 1981 Type 1.
True, the 1981 type 1 is the same as the 1979 type 2, but the 1981 type 2 has a l has a larger S than the type 1, is scarcer, and more valuable than 1981 type 1...confusing? Both the 1979 and 1981 type 2 issues are the desirable ones to own. There are three mint mark types for 1979 and 1981. they are the BLOB S, the Small S, and the Large S. The 1979 T1 has the Blob S, the 1979 T2, and the 1981 T1 have the Small[clear] s, and the 1981 T2 has the Large[clear] S.
Hey Dave , when you can , purchase yourself a Redbook or the US Coin Digest. The books explain a lot of information relating to the different types of coins . They have lots of good information about grading ,what coins to look for , and a price guide which I do not care about that much. You will find them helpful in many ways . This is just my opinion but I think you will be pleased with the purchase , I purchased a lot of different books but that will come in time. As far as pricing of your coins , some online price guides keep their pricing up to date. Maybe some of the other members can suggest a book for you , that they feel is great reference material. Welcome to Coin Talk I am fairly new also , and glad to see new people in the hobby asking questions. The members here are a terrific bunch , like to have fun , and are the best source of knowledge there is. Prepare yourself to be able to take a joke because some like to have some fun once and a while . Do not take anything personal everybody means well and are willing to share their vast knowledge .
