1943 steel penny weird hole in middle

I almost tossed this one in the junk drawer because at first glance it looks like maybe someone started drilling into it then changed their mind...however if you look at both sides it wasn't a drill bit that did this, any ideas?

Whatever it was, it was done to the coin after it left the mint...

 

It's just damage. What caused it is a guessing game that's impossible to ever know the real answer.

 

The only way to find out how and why is to find the person that did it. GL!

No chance of an error, definitely something that was done to it post strike.

Sorry but no. That did not happen at the mint. Also, did you notice this thread is 4 years old?

 

I agree PMD (post mint damage) it appears maybe that it was shot with a BB gun. IMO

Possibly done with a spade dill then cleaned up around the hole after.

From the circular marks around the hole, and the shiny flattened marks on the reverse with more circular marks, I'd say a punch of sorts was used.

What do you mean by "the real deal"? There is no real error anything like this...

 

Maybe a mini gun bullet hole!

 

It looks like a transfer punch or a roll pin punch caused the damage.
