This appears to me to be XF possibly AU to me - I am on the fence & was wondering if any of the well versed members here would be able to comment-

I have not come across one in the condition I am looking for but this struck my eye as nice - It does apppear to have some film on the coin & I would most likely have it preserved / conserved if I were to purchase it . From the picture the planchet looks pretty nice still.

    Thanks-

I would personally pass on it. The coin looks like it has been lacquered to me.

it has a pretty bad ding in the 'E' on the reverse, I can't go AU on it, but the main problem is the verdigris. that needs immediate attention, it should be taken to a professional coin preservationist.

Clearly NOT original surfaces. Harshly cleaned. I'll dig out my ANA Standards book, but it's certainly not AU. My first guess is VF details at best.

I really do like these coins. I don't know why they switched the Large Cents from this to the Matron Head design in 1816, while keeping the cooler Classic Head for the Half Cents for 20 more years ! I don't get it.

Neither have I ! At least not at a decent price. Good ones are tough to find. They won't come cheap.

Also, there is some kind of crud on the obverse on the bust.
    Possibly the laquer previously mentioned.

The coin if priced right would be a good pickup. I would send it to NGC or whatever it is and have them take care of it. Condition wise its not bad at all. It does look as though its suffering from orange peel in the photos.

Possibly from lacquer or something similiar, but... that being said it could be fixed I think. I would say if priced in the VF range it may be a good pickup. Thats where I would net grade it out at.

My opinion is worth precisely what you paid for it.

Appears to have been cleaned in the past but if it's the coin you want, then go ahead and buy it. Be advised that if you ever plan on reselling it the faults which have been pointed out here will come back to haunt you.

    Good Luck

I'm not so sure that it's lacquered, could be. I think it's PVC damage that has eaten right into the coin. I'd pass - bodybag material.

I personally think the coin has enough details to go XF - but net grade would be VF. I personally like the AU 1810 coin on ebay right now. Granted - I do not usually price or track coins at that grade, but I think the one ebay is a great looking coin.

I also would pass on that coin.
Too many questions about its surfaces.
And I personally don't care for the off-center strike of the reverse.
My philosophy: "If you buy a coin with a problem, you'll always have a coin with a problem."

Hold onto your money for a better coin even if it means having to save more.

BTW, here's mine. Certainly not top grade, but otherwise problem free.

    PCGS says "That's a VF" ... I agree.

It has similar details to the piece in question, which I would call VF details, problems, net VG.

The coin looks as if it could have been pressed with "gold leaf" at one point.

kanga, I like your cent too. It seems to have a little gunk on it here and there, but I like it. What do you suppose happened to the lower left part of the O in One? Filled die?

tcore, I noticed that too, and my guess would be the same as yours. Just a bit of a die fill.
There's any number of possibilities for the "softness" of the strike on the reverse rim fro about 12 to 2. But my first guess would be an overpolished die.
