Where to start, inherited collection

  1. This is all really good info to know. Never would thought Acetone is ok to use. And Im glad to see the coins can withstand some hot water. Ill be sure they're residue free after I clean and dry them.

    Again I'm grateful for the advice bc I didn't know any of this was permissable. As Abercombie implys I sure don't want to ruin the coins.

    Please be very careful when you dry them. They need not be rubbed. Really, set it softly on a plush towel, then turn it over. Let the towel absorb the water. Don’t rub!
     
  4. Oh thanks for that tip - Ill be sure to let the coins dry on a soft towel.

    Out of curiousity what effect does rubbing a coin have on the coin? Thanks again.

    Wiping or rubbing can be an enemy. The damage is not from the wiping material, but from any grit that might be on the coin or on the towel. This grit can be hard and cause scratches on the coins. This is most important on uncirculated, almost uncirculated and proof coins. For well worn coins, wipe away. Still a good policy is to blot the coins with a towel.
