Dear list, Whilst metal-detecting I have found following coin: It would be nice If we could get an opinion or comment on the origin of the coin. Many thanks, - J.
I agree with ACH-- not Roman, probably not ancient. Medieval, perhaps? Some medieval collectors hang out on this ancients forum. Maybe one of them will see this post and offer direction. Meanwhile, it is helpful to post the size and weight of your coin as well as the general location of the find. Here are the images cropped, lightened, and joined for ease of viewing. The reverse might be a knight riding a horse, heading left?
My inexpert opinion: It's saying 17th century Spain(ish?) to me. (I very much doubt it's earlier than 17th century, could be 18th.) But on a cursory search I can't find anything like it.
Looks to be a Lithuanian issue of Casimir, 1 solidus. But normally there would be a crown and date above the knight. Interesting... good luck on getting an exact ID, and post your results!
I think you're on to something! Maybe this, or one like it? I have no idea what denomination were struck or what they are called. Maybe the OP coin is smaller? Looks like the OP coin date ends in a 6, perhaps with a 6 before it, so given the years of reign possibly 1666? From ACsearch, London Ancient Coins, Auction N, lot 368 26.06.2014, sold for 7 GBP. Poland-Lithuania, Johann Casimir (1648-1668). ’ Schilling (15mm, 1.46g, 3h). Bust r. R/ Horseman l. KM50. Green patina, Good VF
This was the direction I was headed, as well. I saw "SOLID..." and knew the denomination was a solidus (of the non-gold, non-ancient kind,) so I headed for the Baltic. Had pretty much figured out Johann Casimir but not gotten to Lithuania yet. I doubt I ever would have pinned down the exact variety. Nice sleuthing, @Severus Alexander, and neat find, @mr.j, and thanks for the image enhancement, @TIF.
I think you're right, 1666. I looked a bit more, and still can't find any with the date ending over the horse's head. (Also, I think schilling and solidus are equivalent in this context.)
I am amazed that TIF got what she got out of the image originally presented. I didn't recognize it and I own one. They are common for 1661 but I do not know the range. Perhaps there is somone over on CT's wold coins area that knows these???
Hi all, This coin was found in the Lviv area, Ukraine so that matches the suggested origin. I'll get some additional details like size and weight by end of week. I tip my hat to you all not only for the impressive expertise but also the friendliness and helpfulness. I guess we'll investigate the immediate region a bit more then
