Does anyone here regularly buy these, and if so, how do you store them? What is your ultimate plan for them? I’ve played with the idea of buying one for the past couple of years, but have never pulled the trigger. Just curious about how collectors handle them.
I assume you're talking about these from the U.S. Mint? I'd be curious to see if anyone actually does this. I've heard that some dealers buy the bags, hoping to get some MS70's out of them and dump the rest. I don't think that holding on to them for any period of time is going to benefit you, but that's just my $0.02.
Well I have been picking up the two roles set once a year for the past few years and now I'm thinking about buying the bag of 200 P & D multi bags at least I get the chance to search them and not have to open the rolls. Yet I like to question where would you find the better quality coin in the role or in the bag which one gets beat up more or less that's a kind of question I have.
i dont buy them regularly, but when i do, i search them for errors, save a few of the nicer ones and dump the rest at bank...
I do not buy bags, but I buy 2 rolls of P and D Kennedy's every year from the mint. One roll I open and fill the slots in Dansko folders. I then sell the rest of the open roll to other coin club members for $1.00 to fill their folders. The other two rolls are kept in my collection of full rolls by year.
I do buy the bag lately, every year since 2014. They are APPROXIMATELY half D's and half P's but not necessarily exactly so. I open them, search through them for MS67's and PL coins (from Denver - haven't found a PL from Philly yet), and just tube up the rest and store them. I have gotten MS67's from Philly though, frosty, not PL.
I bought my first $100 Mixed P&D bag from the Mint in 2004 which contained the 2001 Kennedys. Its cost was $135 back then. From that bag, I found my 2001-D Kennedy missing the reverse clad layer and one coin that graded MS68 by NGC. I sold the MS68 which more than paid for the cost of the bag, and I still have the coin missing the clad layer. Chris
There are no MS70s for Kennedy’s besides the silver set. It’s 67/68s people are usually looking for. But yes a lot of time the rest get dumped at the bank as the can be not worth the time trying to sell
I bought one of these a few years back - shop for a low premium, store in 10 plastic tubes with screw caps - the 1964s didn't circulate very much, so you get more silver for your $$ - if bullion spot price rises, sell or don't sell - your choice https://www.apmex.com/product/5299/90-silver-kennedy-half-dollars-100-face-value-bag-1964
Thank you, fellow members, for that great insight on the bag verse rolls. I will still purchase a roll set but will have fun with them bags Best regards SchwaVB57 and V. Kurt Bellman
I used to buy the clad Kennedys, but I found that other than the very few higher grade ones or occasional error, it really wasn't worth the time. i do still collect the silver proof Kennedy Halves- 1964 and 1992 to present proof coins. They have done well and some years, for example the 2012, have really gone up in value. I have the 1992 through 2017 in Proof 70 Deep Cameo, the killer is the proof 1964, the first year. The highest grade is Proof 69 Deep Cameo, I have Proof 69 Cameo. I am tied for second place, for Proof Silver Kennedy Half Dollars in the PCGS Registry. I don't see getting the missing 1964 Proof 69 DC, because it's selling for around $3,000. You never know though, I did get a good deal on the Proof 69 Cameo, so there's always hope. I do have the Kennedy P,D,S,S set in a Dansko Album, up to date and that has appreciated nicely.
I get the rolls from the mint every year I also buy the rolls at cost from people that have them and want to take them to the bank if I find a good coin I usually give them extra for that coin but never tell how much they would be worth .I do take the rest to the bank
I have enjoyed all the responses so far. Thanks. I never thought about the possibility of finding a PL. Now I’m intrigued.
I usually identify the 4 or 5 "PL-iest" Denver halves and send them in. Odd-numbered years have been working better than even-numbered for some odd reason, but I'll be checking the 2018's anyway. My 2015 bag was "rotten with" PL Denver halves.
Over a 10-year period, I sold almost 100 SQ's, Kennedy halves and Sac dollars that graded MS68, and all of them came from Mint bags. Chris
