My bid is $75000.00 !!!! Looks like an altered 1944-D to me, not an altered 1914-D, I reported it and bid $75000, someone bid it up under me please. It's getting cancelled anyways, lets have some fun.

Free case of hotsauce to the highest bidder under me. My word on it.

    Jack:
Well he (the seller) does state that it is altered.
And a pretty bad job at that.

What do you want him to say? It says altered in both the title and description. You can still tetract your bid. I would suggest that you do so.

That listing is gone. It's been pulled.
However, there's another one that's still active. Also acknowledges that it's an altered coin.

What do you guys think of this one. How do you put a "D" on a coin?

What is it that indicats this is an altered coin? The mint mark looks "funny" to me, but I can't really be specific.

That's one of those questions that should never be answered on a public forum.

There is a collectible market for counterfeits, especially contemporary counterfeits. The cast 1914-D cents that the Numismatist covered years back bring some decent money.

Actually I was just trying to have some fun and give away a case of hotsauce knowing the auction would be pulled. Not being an ebay cop, but it should have been listed as an altered 1944-d made to look like a 14-d. We have seen many of these that slip by and someone, usually an excited kid, bids 14-d price thinking they are getting a problem 14-d that may net grade.

Would not want it to be my kid

One of the more common ways is to shave a mintmark from another coin, then there is the build up by removing metal around the mintmark to form a mm, like the hobo nickels remove metal to form a picture, and an old way, much less common is to go thru the side of the coin with a drill near the surface and insert a " punch" and emboss the mintmark like the old Dymo labels would emboss the plastic label strips, then plug the hole in the circumferance.

Many many more ways I dont know I'm sure.
