just got a 20$ set of NF String and Sons Nickel rolls. First two rolls produced 0 Keepers. Nothing older than ‘62. Third roll in and I got quite the surprise. 1899 V nickel. Now i know it seems very unlikely and the truth is I already have a 1899 V nickel , but mine is in much better condition. Still a great find! 7 rolls to go! (Second V Nickel is the one I already had, just to clarify these are not the same coins!) they are out there! Keep hunting!!!!
Guess they haven't started using automation to pick out desirable nickel varieties -- it would be a lot harder than doing it for silver, which they're apparently doing now. Great find!
I've only managed to pull 2 V Nickels out of circulation after searching close to $75k and the oldest was 1904. Congrats
Yup, bought 40$ today, 2 sets of 20$s, still got about 4 rolls left. The first set of 20$ gave 3 hole fillers (‘39S being the lowest minted). This second set of 10 rolls hasn’t produced anything but the VNickel, a ‘48 plain ( already have) and a 78plain I’m great shape that I’ll probably hang onto.
I’ve been going through nickels about 3 months now, probably about 400$ worth of rolls. Haven’t even gotten a box yet, the most I ever get is 10 rolls at a time!
So that last $20 of rolled nickels wasn’t a total bust. I typically pull about 7-8 pre ‘60 nickels, and about 2 hole fillers. however .in this set 0f ten rolls I only pulled 6 pre 60s nickels and I’m still very pleased with the finds. 1941p ( already have multiples) 1948p ( have multiples) 1953p ( have multiples) 1957D ( have multiples) Now, what made it all worth it was the 1899 V nickel and the 1944D nickel ( found in the second to last roll just as I was losing hope) . This war Nickel was one of the 5 I don’t have so not only was it a cool find, but also a hole filler! Below is my ‘39-‘61 Folder.
I don’t think it would be too difficult , figure older nickels would weigh .01-.10 grams less from even average circulated coins. But your right , the problem with that is it still leaves ALOT of hand work to be done.
I got a Buffalo Nickel the other day out of a roll - totally shocked me. S mint mark but I will need some Nic-A-Date to get the date.
Nice! I only have 1 Buffalo surprisingly. Lol. I have 1 shield and now 10 V nickels. I haven’t seen any buffalos at good prices. Another guy from the forums said he’d ship me some nickels including 1 buff nickel. Still waiting for them. I imagine they’ll take forever in reg envelope USPS mail. Honestly I want to trade my v nickels and shield nickel for some junk silver but I don’t think I’m allowed to post in the want/need forums yet. Probably better off selling them then using the money for some better silver item.
I don't consider any silver as junk nor would I ever trade a V nickel that I found in a roll. Everyone collects differently. Good luck in your numismatic life - I've really enjoyed it since I got my first silver quarter as a paper boy in the mid 70's.
Nice! I had a fairly small/beginner collection years back, a few mint sets(modern 95-2003) a couple silver eagles and few other silvers I found when I was a cashier at McDonald’s in Highschool. Nothing big, that I recall anyway. But my life got hectic towards the end of college after I broke my leg. I wound up spending / pwning every bit of my collection ( not for too much either). I’ve since cleaned up my behaviors and habits. About 3/4 months ago a saw a roll hunting video on YouTube and I said I gotta get back into collecting. I consider myself about 40% collector/ 60% silver stacker. My collection def shows it lol. I really enjoy digging through rolls and filling books. One thing I didn’t mention earlier, with the 40$ I went through today I did finally find a ‘60 plain that I need for my SPARE 1960s decade set of nickels. I already have 3 70s sets aside.
And remember, there's a normal variation (tolerance) in weight of newly-minted nickels. I don't remember off the top of my head what it is, but it's surely greater than .01g, and I suspect it's greater than .1g.
I got a really nice 1930 p buffalo in change at a Kroger last week. Coulda knocked me over with a feather
