Last week I mentioned that a 2016 Gold Mercury dime came up for sale at the Market I sell at but the dealer I set up with beat me to it. This past Sunday I managed to talk him out of it and with some trading and a little cash I managed to buy it at what I feel was a fair price Now it's off to my collection
I have an affinity for them too. The gold one is a good one to have overall. Though I don't understand the first strike. They sold out in minutes, so technically all of them are first strikes. yes I know, you have to send them in still in the box .. but they all sold initially.
Nice piece, but I'll NEVER consider it any kind of part of a Merc dime set. It's bullion, plain and simple.
Yeah, I think I'll want one at some point, but not as "part of a dime set". I consider it to be about on par with the Merc-obverse palladium round, but well above third-party silver rounds. And as long as the gold is close to 2x bullion and the palladium is more than 1.5x bullion, I'm unlikely to get either. I may well regret it for the palladium with its very limited mintage, but here I am.
I think the issue Price from the Mint was $205. Ones slabbed SP-70 by PCGS are selling for around $225 to $250
I don't know why they thought they had to put that damn, "24k / 1/10 oz AU" (...) on them. That completely ruined them for me. They don't even put any of that crap on the ASE or AGE "coins".
Anyway, nice piece!! I was real excited when these were announced. I love the design, and my Wife REALLY loves the design, so we were in line to get one when they were released. I like em in the OGP, and no regrets!!
I paid the $205 from the Mint. Mine has some serious finning around the edge of the coin. Not that it means anything, it's just neat. Although I have seen a bunch sell for a lot more because of this issue.
'Cuz they ain't 24K. Only the .999'ers are. The pretend "series inclusions" are: the 1/10 oz. Merc. the 1/4 oz. Stander the 1/2 oz. Walker, and the 3/4 oz. Kennedy Among the more creative people, they include the 1/4 oz. fractional Buffalo, which is closer to nickel size in gold than any 1/4 oz. "quarter" ever will be.
ASE's and AGE's DO state the amount of silver or gold present, just like those other four gold bullion pieces do - those I enumerated in post #15. The 2016 gold Merc, Stander and Walker coins ARE bullion pieces. They would have been illegal to make if they weren't. The upcoming pink gold Breast Cancer pieces are NOT bullion - they needed an Act of Congress to be made. The 2016 centennial bullion pieces did not need one, and didn't GET one.
I love the 3 coins, And i DO call them coins because they have the face value. I purchased the2016 pcgs-sp-70 walking gold half. My favorite among the 3 of them. Thinking about the 1/4 standing one.
I agree they are just bullion, but to me nice bit of art. Wait a year or two as the blush will wear off, and the price will fall. I do not collect nclt per se, but some deserved to be appreciated for art's sake. I do love to purchase medals because of size and beauty. This medal was designed by Frank Eliscu. It's a two part medal, obverse and reverse nest together to form one large medal. I actually paid less than bullion for it. It's 58mm / about 2.5 inches and weighs in at 3.3725oz troy. By the way Frank Elisen (1912-1996) among other things designed the Heisman Trophy in1935 He was quite a sculptor and medalist. The Merc.is an inspiring design. Love it.
