Yes, you read the title correctly, there is indeed a Colosseum 'sestertius' on offer as a purportedly genuine piece struck by Domitian for Divus Titus currently up for auction on eBay.

Of course logic would tell you that it is too good to be true.

I thought I would give you folks a heads up, just in case you were looking for the bargain of the century.

You have 5 more days to decide.

Looks like he has a couple case sestertius up for sale. I think the Hadrian has a chance of being real. But all the others are cast copies.

I won't lie, some of my best/rarest coins are ex eBay. But it definitely is a caveat emptor venue.

Is this a cast? The way the legends end abruptly while the flan continues on looks like what you get from a transfer die used to press fakes. Don't misunderstand me here, there is no doubt the coin is fake but I was unsure that it was made by casting. It could be either. I have never seen a fake with more flan continuing past where the mother coin design stopped.

I like the Pertinatx sestertius. Its reasonably well done and if it were discretely marked as a replica and priced appropriately it would be a good space filler for someone. Its a shame they keep selling these as genuine, but, well, there are just too may who cant tell.
