To all those Lincoln Wheat Cent Collectors, I have a Question

I was going to submit a 1955-S Lincoln for grading as I thought it had a shot as PL, so I went to NGCs website to look at populations for PL coins.... but didn't find any. I was told there are PL steels from 1943(I was only looking at the 50's), but none of any other date(just wheats, not memorials)

So are the TPG's really tough about calling a coin PL? I know PCGS won't label them at all, but if it's PL, shouldn't they label it that way?

I'll try and add pictures later of the coin I was going to submit. The polish lines on it are pretty strong, more so on the reverse.

    Anyone have any insight?

I am probably incorrect, but I do not believe TPG's grade business strike cents as a "Proof Like" category. To my knowledge, I have never ran across any. Plus, remember, there are hundreds of 1955 S cents in original rolls in collectors hands. I have 3 myself never opened I picked up in the early 60's.

They do have a PL category for Wheat Lincoln's. There have been 19 designated PL's in the the Lincoln Wheat series. All 19 are 1943-S Steel cents.

As for the 1955-S even in a very nice MS grade, I don't think it's worth grading.
If it were to be graded PL and be the only 1 in the population, then it would be.
Then people would be cracking out those rolls of 1955-S.
How about a photo? I'm sure people here could come to a consensus opinion if it appeared PL or not.

I think it'd be near impossible to get a PL grade on a 55-S. It would have to have mirror surfaces.

So best you’ll get is a star if it has PL surfaces basically

To me it is not worth submitting to a TPG. It will cost a lot more then it will be worth when graded. It is your coin and money. I am only telling you my opinion. You know what opinions are worth.

It is a very nice 55 S, I grade it as a RB, not RD. The reverse is a lot closer to a RD grade in my opinion.

Here is a 55 S in my Dansco Album, I feel it is only MS66 RD at best. IMG_0639.JPG IMG_0640.JPG

I would not have it graded either.

If you choose to submit that 55-S and IF there were a PL category the coin wouldn’t get it. Still, a nice coin.

Just because one wears gloves this doesn't mean care should not be taken to avoid mishandling or possibly touching a coin's surfaces. Just friendly food for thought.

Nice pics of the reflections of the lettering of the book, certainly gives the suggestion of PL.

But...the obverse fields look streaky and the reverse has something going on at 6 o'clock.

I don't think a TPG would assign PL to it. Again, as mentioned earlier it would be the first and only one via PCGS population, unless I read that listing wrong supplied by robec...

    Very nice coin.

I think you are looking at a coin I showed as a comparison. It is no way proof like, and more red than the OP coin posted.

Dry winter hands aren’t the best for handling raw coins. I’ve had a many slip out of my hands. I find the gloves make it easier to grip when my hands are dry in the winter.

I believe Books is talking about the first picture where your middle finger appears to be pressed against the reverse of the coin.

Although I do not believe they're necessary, it's a personal decision with no wrong or right about it. If they're what you prefer or what makes you more comfortable, all the power to you. The main point was that many using them seem to forget or ignore the fact that gloves are not immune to causing problems/issues, and is especially true on MS level coins and/or with mirrored fields.
