My Ebay buy list averages around 600-700 a month BUT my sold column is the same range I like to keep it that way.
50K a year in coins is about what one of my friends spent over the last 3 years. He has some incredible stuff in his safe deposit box, too! He never goes for condition census coins, just great rarities like the starred reverse, 1802 reverse of 1800 half cent, chain cent, etc and it is a lot of fun just seeing him find them. He works awfully hard, but he looks like a child at Christmas when he shows them. I cannot fault him his pleasures since he earned it. Mike
I think I will spend about 600 euros this year, so I suppose it could be 301-750 dollars for 2008, but it could be a little more.
Not too hard to believe, especially if they are a coin dealer. I personally saw a transaction exceed a million dollars at a coin shop I frequent in Las Vegas. The guy that was working the counter that day said thats not too unusual, as they have several customers who spend that much three of four times a year. And thats peanuts compared to the shopping the store must do to keep a desirable enough inventory on hand to accomodate sells like that. Guy~
Why would this be hard to believe? I know many people who will spend a few hundred thousand at a single auction and not give it much thought. I recall one person who was upset that they were able to purchase "nothing" at an auction. Turns out nothing was just shy of $100,000, but it was "nothing" to them. That's at a single auction, not a full year of buying. We all have different income levels and budgets. Many people also rotate coins from their collection. You may not be able to afford $20,000 a year in coins, but if you have a $50,000 collection and can spend $5,000 a year, you may sell $20K worth and buy another $25K worth. If anything, I am surprised at how low most of the estimates are. Over half the respondents said $750 or less next year. I would have expected the average budget to be much higher, in the $2K-3K range.
I know dealers can spend that much - its a business, not a personal collection. As collectors, as i said, for someone like me, its truly mind boggling .. i know it happnes 'to other people'... but its just hard me me to imagine!
Thats the true definition of a hobby budget. I know exactly how you feel. Keeping the wife out of the loop is almost as challenging as the hobby itself! Guy~
Holy heck, ain't this the truth! But, we only make so much, so I can only spend so much without it becoming obvious. I think I spent around $700 during the '06 - '07 year, and probably about $600 during the '07 - '08 year (which obviously isn't over yet). I'm guessing I'll actually be spending more this year, due to the fact that I now have a salary job and quarterly bonuses. Maybe $800 as I'll be buying more gold this year. We'll see.
How can I vote? I have no way of knowing what coins I will find during the year that (a) fit my collecting desires, and (b) are priced at amounts I am willing to pay. That said, the last few years have been in the $5-15,000 range, so next year may be the same (or more, or less).
I had to setup a seperate buy account just because of that, my secret hidin place, no girls allowed, my daughter included.
