Oh wow, @Randy Abercrombie , that is beautiful! Good luck with your negotiating. I am certain that if you love it as much as it seems you do, it will one day be yours.
I can definitely see how coin collecting can become addicting already, disease or not, it’s definitely a disease that would be worth having! Much better than some other unhealthy addictions that come to mind as well. Haha :)

Perhaps think of it this way.... if I had a toned coin and swore up and down that it occurred naturally, would you believe me or base your opinion solely upon the coin itself?

This is somewhat similar to how one can pull a coin from their pocket that would rightly grade into the MS ("uncirculated") range even though it was taken directly from circulation. A coin's history is meaningless, especially when compared to what it's condition or state of preservation tells us. Well, it's the same with toning in that you may know a coin's history, but the TPG doesn't and can therefore base their determination only upon what they see.

Unfortunately, natural toning is a very vague descriptor. It is well known that placing a coin into certain holders or albums will result in toning, so does knowing this and using them to store coins result in naturally toned coins? How about placing said holders/albums in a place that will promote faster toning? Do you see where I'm going with this?

We could also take it one step further and point out the fact that some apparently natural toning can be replicated at whim, and many claim that any/all toning can be done artificially, so where to draw the line? This is why market acceptance is all that matters.

Good... sometimes I fail to make the intended point (or sense) when writing on the go. :)

I am glad you added those other photos. the toning could have been cause by that fuzzy container it was in... ??? how many years did you say it was in it ? strange how the back side did not get toned... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Randy's coin toning is very beautiful to me. if you get a buyer for your toned bullion coin great.

after looking at this photo.... I am guessing the toning could have been caused by this container it was in... ??? wait for other opinions...

There is no doubt that the holder caused the toning., also the conditions in a wood cabinet. The color tones are not the usual but, most of the American eagles have toning that would not be acceptable to a Morgan.

@spirityoda I attached a couple more photos so you can see the side and back. Yes, there is slight toning on the back, mostly close to the depression area of the box, where air obviously got to the back side while it was in the case. Unfortunately these photos are not truly doing the coin justice, and I need to pull out my dslr and get some professional photos done. For now tho, you can see that yes, the toning did also occur on the back but only very slightly, because it was flat inside the case, so slight that I did not see it originally.

I think it’s a mixture of environment and the case that probably caused the toning. I want to get a professional to look at it F2F, just so I can record the value for personal records. I don’t think I will sell it right now, especially with all that I have learned today. If anything, I’ve learned I need to learn a lot more about all this! Ha!

The toning is definitely satuarated into the coin. It’s nothing that can be rubbed or smudged by handling, so that is another supposedly proof that it’s not artificial, along with several other things that you would probably need to verify in person. It’s definitely an interesting subject.

I agree, @Randy Abercrombie coin is awesome! I look forward to the day he gets to own it and show us all!

Also, it’s a 1997 coin, so that would mean it’s been in its case for 21 years.

so now I am thinking natural toning due to what it was stored in. what is it worth ? I don't know. check Ebay completed auctions. current auctions on toned american eagles on Ebay are crazy high right now. I did not want to upset you in any way. I collect toned Canadian 50 cent pieces and toned caribou quarters. I have many natural toning and some questionable toning. I enjoy beautiful toning. believe me it is a learning process. I am still learning from the pros. have a great day.

A coin should not be held by the face only the edges, for fear of leaving minute surface abrasions and oils/ fingerprints. A quick rinse, or soak in acetone would be good.

I did that in the photo, and thought about that after. I will not do it again! Thanks for the reminder.

You did not upset me at all. If anything, you made me realize if I do sell it, I definitely need to have a professional organization appraise and certify it first, for that very reason. It’s definitely a unique coin, I am glad I started researching before I thought it was something I should try to clean off. That would have been a disaster!

Jhayes222 here is a recent Canadian set bought by me. this container was the reason for this type of toning I learned....

Those are very beautiful! I wonder if it is how the case sits out of the bottom, that the air got to the back in your case as opposed to the case I have? Anyway, it’s such an interesting subject, and not one coin is the same! I am definitely hooked now! :)

    FYI,
some people base ASEs on bullion only prices, and spot is currently about $16.50 per ounce. The average price of silver in 1997 was $4.91 per ounce

Others add more numismatic ( collector) prices.
For instance, this 1997 ASE coin in a BU Brilliant Uncirculated grade is selling for $37.69 on APMEX https://www.apmex.com/search?q=1997 american silver eagle

For some people the toning adds value, for others it detracts value.
In order to maximize value you need to sell to the end buyer, not a middleman. So something like eBay comes into play, although it add fees, subtracting total revenue.

There are examples of PCGS 1997 ASEs being toned on one side.
There are examples of a non-certified toned coin selling for $41ish.
