You say "decently nice"; CNG called it "one of the finest known specimens". The difference between those two descriptions seems to be $50k.
Thanks everybody - lots of great discussion on this thread and some fine examples, particularly the unaffordable jugate bust type.
Thank you. I've had that one for a long time and I would like to get a couple more as good. But, as always, other collecting interests keep getting in the way.
CARAUSIUS & ALLECTUS, The British Usurpers, P. J. Casey, Yale University Press, 1994. I would appreciate comments from anyone who owns and uses this book regarding its usefulness and value as a research tool. Particularly Chapter 5, The Ideology of Carausian and Allectan Coin Types and Chapter 6, The Evidence of the Coinage. Thank you.
Great comments and coin pics everyone. @Sallent @Bing @dougsmit @Alegandron - thank you for posting those great portrait obverses.
That would be pretty much like my guess - at least 75% - and also not based on any documented evidence.
Bumping a thread... The answer for 2019 is somewhere in the middle but on the low side ($12K hammer). I can't speak for the price of the exact example posted earlier in the thread but I have finally crossed the type off my list, thanks to the Triton sale this week. It isn't the most beautiful coin, and definitely a few grades below the Aureo & Calico example, but I consider myself extremely fortunate that I was able to acquire one in good condition. It's early in the year but this will definitely be firmly in my top 10.
Congratulations AJ on landing that one. My Carausius is much more humble. Carausius 3244. Billon antoninianus, RIC V-2 -, Webb Carausius -, Borne Carausius -, SRCV IV -, Hunter IV -, Linchmere -, Burton Latimer -, Bicester -, Carausian Hoard -, et al., aF, broad flan, near black patina, rough, corrosion, scratches, 4.186g, 23.1mm, 225o, Camulodunum (Colchester, England) mint, c. mid 292; obverse IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, late reign tetrarchic portrait; reverse VIRTVS AVG (the valor of the Emperor), Mars walking right, transverse spear in right hand, shield or trophy in left hand, S - P flanking across field, C in exergue; from the Charles Peters Carausius Collection; extremely rare "This is the only specimen of this type known to Forum. We did not find another online or in the many references examined. The type must have been struck during a very short period after the mintmark was changed from S - C / C to S - P / C but before the reverse legends were changed to the plural ending AVGGG."
If it were anyone but you, I would suggest you declare it #1 now but you might come up with something that gives it a run for the money. My last coin of 2018 was Carausius and not Pax or Providentia. TEMPORVM FELIC with PFI obverse is no bull and certainly no fratres but it was one I lacked. It may make my top ten if I only buy ten coins this year.
I have never owned a coin of Carausius or Allectus. Allectus is a slight priority for me, since I want one of those with the galley reverse, and have for a while. It is very safe to assume that a 3-headed jugate Carausius will never be mine.
ALLECTUS RI Allectus 293-296 CE AE AntPAX Boaty McBoaty... RI Allectus 293-296 AE Quinarius London Virtus Galley AE17 2-3g S 13870 RIC 55
Getting a jugate bust type would be fantastic. I'm definitely keeping my eyes open. If I find one in decent condition I'll pull the trigger. A bit pricey but probably worth it in the long run.
What a cool video! Any idea what Latin-language coin reference he is using at the beginning of the video?
