While searching through old coins like 1890s morgan dollars and such, I found a penny in the drawer that was silver in color. The date is 1944, it jumps to the magnet from a few inches away! I know this might be too good to be true so someone tell me how to authenticate it?

We get claims of 1944 Steel Cents about once a month.. Majority of the time it's an altered or plated copper Cent.

Be a nice find. I will reserve mockery until the facts are in.
Photos, scale weight pictures, sworn affidavit from Katy Perry.

Did you take a magnet to it?

if it "jumps" to the magnet then its a copper plated steel cent.

That it jumps to the magnet is a good sign. But there are fakes from China of this coin as well. A weight would be useful and of course images. If the opinions here are favorable, then the next step would be to send it to one of the top grading services.

I do the same, responding without my second cup of coffee.

If it's a 1944 on a 1943 steel planchet, you want it to stick to a magnet.
Will a thin steel plating be enough to draw to a magnet?

I'm interested to see how this one pans out. Best of luck to the OP.

Look at the edges straight on. The 43 steel core was plated with zinc before stamping them out as round, so the steel core should be easily visible on the punched edge. If plated , the edge will be the SAME as the obv and rev. and no steel core will be visible. Jim

    What is the line on
    1. No photo 50/50
    2. No scale 50/50
    3. OP never posts again 20/80

Let’s give him a little time before we start making potentially insulting comments. The OP said they will post photos when they get home. That was this morning and like many of us they are possibly still at work
