Went to a pawn shop i frequent today. Saw some Morgans and some ASE's. He also had a year of the monkey silver coin. I asked about it. He said $30. Ehh. Then he started talking about a 16 d mercury dime and, some other key coins. Then said wanna see? Oh yea. He pulled out a bunch of 2×2's and i saw a 1799 large cent. I said thats what i wanna see. He handed it to me. It was porous and ugly. Got anymore old coppers? i asked, he said yes but, not much time. So he handed me this and said $50 and get outta here so i can get back to work. 20180307_204110-1.jpg 20180307_204233-1.jpg the photos are very deceiving. This thing still has luster. I think its a solid au. So let me have it. What you think?

I know very little about half cents, but I am definitely questioning authenticity of the coin. I've been trying to match the die break for the last 20 minutes, and can't.

EDIT - Die chip, not break

Whatever it is, I can't match it to another coin.

The date could be a bit wonky. The second 0. She's grinning a bit in your coin. Why would a pawn shop sell a valuable coin for $50 when they can get 8x as much? LIBERTY looks larger on yours.

Just look at the reverse, it's not even close to right.

Bingo. Wrong date size and date placement. And wrong reverse die for an 1800.

I bet the 16-D is genuine. (cough, cough)
