Here you go. The slabbed coin is how it was graded by ANACS. In the 2X2 in the same coin how I bought it.
"rare date" for a 70 year old coin with a mintage of 12 million. I hope you didn't buy it thinking it was rare but I'm assuming you did buy it thinking it was a gem since it wouldn't be worth grading unless it had a chance at 66
There are several ebay sellers that list coins like this using scanned images and MS+++++ hooks on the 2x2. This does nothing to change my opinion of them.
No - I didn't bite on the rare date. However, you could say I did bite on the MS+++++. I was hoping it would come back as an MS65 with a Full Thumb. But I figured at the low end it might come back as a MS62 or MS63. So yes - I was extremely disappointed. Obviously, I still have a lot to learn on grading Walkers. The guy I bought it from just says that it wasn't graded properly and my issue isn't with him but with the PGS. He stands by it being an MS+ Walker.
I would stick to already graded examples. Even if it did come back 65 I don't think it was worth the grading fees. If you thought 62 or 63 were even small possibilities (let alone AU) then it definitely wasn't worth sending in. Let other people overpay for grading common coins in common grades in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with owning common coins in common grades, I just think it's best to not mess with submitting them and instead getting them already holdered or keeping them raw.
In got the PGS grade on a special. I had 10 coins graded at $10 each plus return shipping. So I'm not out a lot. The ebay seller 'redlockcoin' refused even partial refund.
What about the cleaning scratches? All those EBay things say rare date. Nice that it straight graded. There is a 1946 with a DD reverse which has a nice premium in the higher grades.
That's just what I've been doing until just recently. All my other PCG slabbs are PCGS. ANACS has been having Coin Show specials that I've now used twice for a total of 16 coins. This is the only one I've been disappointed with.
I think the coins advertised with ++++++ symbols, and rare date, or super rare!, or amazing color!, etc written on the flips are good to stay away from in general.
AU 55 is pretty much a slider grade, meaning it's close enough to BU. Now AU58 is the sweet spot on the right day could be as high as 62-63.
PCG = Professional Coin Grading. There are four major coin grading companies in the USA. They are all suitable to quote in listings as they can confirm certification of coins against the Third Party Grading database (TPG). They companies are: The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) Independent Coin Graders (ICG) American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS) This one was the first to offer the service many years ago.
I was at 55 myself. That coin saw circulation. And may have been cleaned too. No way it’s ms anything
