    Lets have a poll.

Will you be buying the 10th Anniversary Platinum Reverse Proof Set?

The sets will contain two coins- one proof coin and one reverse proof coin. The proof coin will feature frosted raised elements over a mirrored background. The reverse proof coin will feature mirrored raised elements over a frosted background.

Both coins will contain 1/2 ounce of platinum and carry the "W" mint mark. This is the first time the Mint has offered a platinum coin with the reverse proof finish.

The price per set will be $1,949.95. Production will be limited to 30,000 sets. Coins will go on sale December 13, 2007 at 12:00 Noon ET. Orders are limited to one per household.

    HE** no :(

i wish i could however!!! I know these coins will probably sell out, and command a price 10x issue price onthe after market. I only want the reverse proof myself .. but just cant afford the price tage - so i will not be buying the set.

Well currently I do collect the APE coins in 1/10 and 1/4 oz fractionals.

This set with a 2K price point is steep for 1/2 oz coins! With bullion at 1400.00 plus change I just do not see the value here. Be it though they may be beautiful....there is not a large collector base for platinum yet!

That 2 K could buy a very nice large size note in CHCU which I think will hold more value in the long term.

I bought both the gold and Silver Anniversary sets in 2006 and the Gold set has merely doubled in value while the Silver has a 5x increase. The gold shou;d be at 3 to 4x times issue in my opinion, but hey, who the heck am I?

Keep your dollars for better additions....yes, this is RickieB talking..and yes I know how much I love collecting the Eagle series and yes I am not on drugs and yes I am converting into a Paper Holy Roller!

Dang, that was hard to admit!! :D

If i wait to purchase a graded reverse proof, the price might be higher than the original set. But i'd be assured of a PF70 coin. Are the obverse & reverse going to match the current proofs?

To me, all coins not made for circulation are bullion coins and should not carry a numismatic premium until they are, perhaps, 75 years old.

    Nope,

I'm still concentrating on old coins that actually circulated.

I dearly want the platinum reverse proof but if 30,000 are minted then I will wait six months and buy a slabbed PCGS PF70. If 10,000 or less are minted then Katie bar the door because I want a fist full.

It might be a good time to purchase coins on Ebay. As people might be selling to raise funds to purchase the Platinum set. Some sellers seemed to be dumping certain lines, in anticipation of the reverse platinum coins i assumed. As their auctions usually state "Buy these now while their cheap, they'll be going back up soon". Certain lines are flooded with coins that are usually hard to find, sending their prices South.

You to Rickieb. Wow that is a stunner. Had to check and see if I was looking at the original RickieB. I bet you feel much better now.

Well I have never purchased platinum before and this was the was to be my first platinum purchase but this is how I see it from my own twisted perspective.

I have the reverse proof gold and silver coins (one ounce) . Though it would be nice to have platinum reverse proof but since they have announced this version will be a 1/2 ounce coin, I am not so sure. I do wish they could have made the reverse proof platinum in a one ounce coin for some of us old people who can not see as well as we use to. I like to see as much detail in a coin as possible without a magnifying glass. I have absolutely nothing against 1/2 ounce coins but to me it would have been nice to have this reverse proof platinum in a one ounce coin to go along with the gold and silver reverse proof. Maybe the mint could have made a one ounce reverse proof platinum as part of the set and considered the super box they come in as part of the set. That would have been a two thing set right?

Anyhow, I assume that if one wants to have them certified , then they will have to be sent in the original government box to a TPG to have them slabbed and graded, first striked and all that stuff. I know this is not for everyone but lots of people are. If one is fortunate enough to get a 70 then great. I probably will be checking the secondary market to see if I can get one but as AUBU2 said, a 70 grade reverse proof may cost more than the original set. From what I have read about platinum coins , 30,000 sets is a whole bunch. One may be able to get a reverse proof at a reasonable cost down the road but who knows. If they are not what I consider reasonable then that is just fine. Will move on to something else. Still would like to get a nice short set of walkers. Strange other than my annual mint and proof sets, all my recent purchases have been the somewhat classic coins.

Bottom line is I may get this set from the mint but probably will not.

No. I have to pass on this one. However, I am sure the RP will be very nice.

I believe the mintage of 1/2 oz APE Proof is relatively very high compared to prior years (7-8 times more). The total mintage of 1/2 oz APE proof is 45,000 (5,000 singles, 10,000 in 4-coin set and 30,000 in the 10th Anniversary set)! I like the "Enhanced" Reverse Proof coin but the high mintage of 30,000 is of concern.

I may buy the Reverse Proof, if reasonable, in the after market.

    Why a "Set"

I will buy the 10th Anniversary Platinum set but I curse the Mint for going the 1/2 once route with the reverse proof coin. It will look odd and outta place next to my gold and silver RPs. Platinum coins will never be mass market. Poor people don't buy platinum of any size. Three one once RPs in a row would look awesome on display, which is the whole point of collecting. If the price was primary concern why not release a 1-oz. RP "10th Anniversary Coin" for $1950 instead of a 2-coin Tattoo-size coin set? The other coin has been on sale for months and is of little interest to most. Though the 1/2 oz proof will be welcomed into my gold/platinum treasure chest, the Mint is taking the "happy meal" approach where people buy a meal just to get to the toy, take it out, then look for the nearest dumpster to toss the remains. E-bay will be flooded with 2007 1/2 oz. platinum proofs in January! At least there won't be a stampede to get a set...I applaud the Mint for sidelining the coin flippers with a 30,000 run.

I Don't Own Any Platinum Coins Although I Have Always Planned On Buying Some. The Reverse Proof And A Regular Proof Platinum Has Much Appeal, But, Geeeze, That's A Lot Of Money To Drop At One Time. Granted, The Rp Will Be Very Valueable In The Near Future. As With The Gold Proofs They Almost All Graded Pf69 Or 70. No Shoddy Workmanship Here. I Would Expect Pf & Rp 69's & 70's For The Plats Too. It's Still A Tough Call. I'll Have To See What My Financial Disposition Is At The Time They Are Minted. Now I Won't Sleep Tonight Tryin To Figure Out Some WaY To Swing It.

A person might want to wait until platinum takes a price dive(If it ever does) to pick these up. But they probably will increase as did the gold reverse proof. But they are expensive!
