It suffered some sort of environmental damage after it left the mint. I'm guessing heat but it could be many different chemical contacts as well. It has no additional value.

I just found among the change in my pocket a "brown" quarter. It is South Dakota 2006 Denver mint with reed edge. It has been circulated. It is definitely BROWN and there is no silver brilliance anywhere on it, even where the brown is worn off.

You should start a new thread and post a picture, but in this case, I can just about guarantee that it's environmental damage.

This is a pic I "borrowed" from another thread. A really helpful member on CT @paddyman98 also metal detects and posted this pic of some finds. It is not unusual for the cupro-nickel clad layer to discolor when left out in the environment or buried. There is usually at least 1 post/week on Coin Talk asking about this. Sorry, but it's incredibly unlikely that you have anything other than this.

(sorry for stealing your pic @paddyman98 ;))

Unless it has luster like a new shiny penny, it is probably environmental like the pics. My brother-in-law found a quarter missing the copper-nickel clad layer on one side, and it would grade MS63 and 90% red. That is an error.

I have a quarter something like that but the one I have is slightly a different color with more shine it’s not dull looking it’s a 2005 P California state quarter I don’t know if it’s a mint error or just tarnish but I still like it.

As a metal detectorist I can assure you that any clad coin buried in the ground will discolor to the same shades and colors of the soil. We commonly use rock tumblers with water, a spritz of Dawn detergent and a squirt of white vinegar and a handful of white aquarium rocks tumbled for several hours to clean them.

Never mix pennies in. They turn the other coins an impossible to remove shade of pink

@RB6770 ...Welcome to Coin Talk!...you didn’t hijack this thread since you are posting on the same subject...but it is two and a half years old, fewer people will see your contribution than if you had created a new thread, and that is my suggestion...welcome aboard!...Spark
