Got this Sonntag Auction/ Germany 5 yrs ago.... AV Dukat 1785 Wurzburg Mint Franz Ludwig Von Erthal Prinz/ Bishop of Wurzburg
Thanks Mat, the German Cities that were ruled by the Roman Catholic Church issued beautifull coinage. These Erzbistums were headed by Cardinals/ Bishops/ Archbishops/ who were all from noble bloodlines.
Stunning piece. Your threads never disappoint. Since you mention the erzbistum coinage, I will throw out some bookends to compliment your piece. The following are sede vacante medals from 1754, 1779 and 1795. These pieces depict a popular Wurzburg theme: the 3 saints martyred in 689 while performing missionary work in the area: Kilian, Kolonat, and Totnan. Each medal is more or less a taler-size strike at roughly 44mm in size.
I'm not into World coins/medals, but these are beautiful, especially the middle one. The detail in the engraving is astounding!
New addition to compliment the previously posted Wurzburg medals. This one was struck in 1779 and it is 35 mm in size (Helmschrott 850; Zepernick 262).
