Hi all, I have a copy of David Sear's Roman Coins and their Values 3rd revised edition 1981 to give away to a new collector. If you are under the age of 18 please get permission from your parents before participating. For the purposes of this contest a new collector is one who bought her/his first ancient coin within the last year, or is planning on buying that first coin in the next year. In order to be eligible you must write a paragraph on this thread concerning why this book would be helpful to you. I will judge the best paragraph, and the winner gets the book. I also have a first edition copy in dust jacket of Seaby's Roman Silver Coins from 1954 Volume II-Tiberius to Commodus. The runner up in the above contest will receive this book. You have until Monday at 8pm to submit your paragraph to this thread, after which I will make my decision. Good luck and let us see some great submissions! If you have any questions, ask them in this thread or by pm.
I don’t think I count as a “new” collector, but this book would probably be helpful as I venture into Roman stuff.
Hi Orfew... Wonderful and generous gesture. Firstly, if someone under the age of 18 submits a paragraph please disregard my submission entirely. Someone that young with an interest in ancient coins would be the perfect recipient. **I am only a few months into ancient coin collecting (and coin collecting in general). I am very thankful for sites like this and online resources that have helped me thus far... having only scratched the surface of these resources I have much to read and learn. If I was to be gifted this book I would certainly use it to help to focus and plan my collecting path. At the moment my approach is very scattered and needs direction. There would also be a need to “pass it on” so I would offer the volume to my small local library which does not have any ancient coin related materials. Perhaps if none of the paragraphs interest you I could pass on the library name and contact if you would like to donate it directly. Best of luck with the competition… cheers!
Wow! We would love to win this. It would get A LOT of use. After joining CT and seeing some of the ancient coins that have been posted I was recently drawn to the dark side. A couple months ago I finally purchased my 1st ancient Roman coin. Now I am hooked and have added several since then. My wife, who knows more about the Roman Empire than I do, also enjoys collecting ancient coins with me. We both sit down together and look for our next acquisition. We live in a coin "Dark" zone. Meaning our closest LCS is a 140 mile drive. Due to this all of our purchases have been from other forum members. This is mainly due to the fear of buying a fake and having more trust in forum members than online stores/ auction houses. A good Roman Coin Reference Guide would be very helpful for us. Not just in IDing the coins we are looking at, but hopefully it will help us spot fakes better. So far we have done all of our research online. The websites are great, but nothing replaces having a guide in your hands. Thanks for this great opportunity and your generosity. I sure they will be very useful to whomever get them. Good luck to all that enter...Mont
That is an admirable contribution to the Ancient Coin collecting community @Orfew - thank you. How are you going to handle shipping the books? I am curious because I would like to follow your lead - I have several books I would like to donate in a similar fashion.
I'm under the impression shipping is included in the prize. You may want to bring the books you have to the PO and get quotes beforehand. Included in your contest rules can be stated you just pay $xx for shipping.
