He may just have a giant vault of coins that he swims in too. :)

Coming soon to a theater near you... "Numismatists from Outer Space"!

Thrill to the out-of-this-world adventures of our hero, Dr. Edward Denarius (Hugh Beaumont), a classics professor and ancient coin collector. Dr. Denarius finds he is constantly being outbid by the mysterious "Clio" and decides to investigate. To his shock, he finds that "Clio" is actually C.L.I.O. (Coin-collecting Lifeforms Intergalactic Organization), a consortium representing the bidding interests of a group of extraterrestrials! But what fiendish plan do they have in mind that could need so many rare and high-grade ancient coins? Their shocking secret will be revealed- in "Numismatists from Outer Space"! Starring Hugh Beaumont and Beverly Garland, with special appearance by Dudley Manlove. Written and directed by Ib Melchior. In Numismavision.

I have often made strong bids on coins and watched go to someone else within a few seconds of closing. I may not have gotten the coin but at least I MADE HIM PAY for it. I do get a small sense of satisfaction from that.

I want to meet Clio. No joke. I want to meet this person. Their taste and reach have me in frustrating awe. AND I can't escape them. They just stomped on the second fourree I have bid on in the last year (third coin overall.) I'm currently in a WTF state of mind. First the Athenian Owl, then the RR Janiform didrachm (not a fourree)......now an ATG tet. Each time, I threw in a high, last second bid. Each time the bid has not been high enough.

My only consolation is that I had a bid set up on the lesser example in the auction. ....just in case. I won it at the minimum.

    Lost this one

    Got this one

Kingdom of Macedon, Alexander III 'the Great' Fourrée Tetradrachm. Imitating Pella(?), circa 325-315 BC(?). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left, holding sceptre; AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ to right. Cf. Price 217; cf. Heritage NYINC 3063, 33072. 14.51g, 30mm, 10h.

    Extremely Fine. Plated.

It cost me 1/3 the price, that is the other consolation.

btw for someone who is using the Clio-ed alias at CNG......I've been using Clioed since I got clipped last year. Has not helped. It attracted others to the item. I'll be changing up the alias for the next auction.

Lol, I do wonder if the fellow under "Clio" knows that he's a somewhat celebrity? 'Cause I also really want to meet him. ;)

Is Clio strictly a CNG phenomenon?

    Happened to me MANY times:dead:
A "coin club" friend attended CNG/ Triton XIX (Adams Coll.) His interest were the Mughal Empire/ Jahangir AV "Zodiac" class "A" Mohurs. It was rumored that a filthy rich Saudi Prince had agents at the sale to win all of them/no matter the cost. How can ordinary working stiffs like us compete with that? Turned out he was right, all of the Zodiac types sold 10 X estimates. Depends on luck too/ I always wanted a AV 4 Dukaten Ferdinand V 1835-48 (any date). I lost all hope, after I got outbid on Rauch/ Fruhwald over and over. Their examples in fast stempelglanz (About Unc.) =US MS-65 hammered over 12K++ euros! A perfect FDC version came up at Jan. Spink NY Sale. Opening bid was $5000US/ I thought even though I had NO chance might as well watch auction. Lot came up around 9:30AM/ highest bid was 5K, then last call came/ I bid 5250 waiting for 'outbid" warning .....it never did....I WON! So, you never know.

CNG/ Nomos/ Obolos are related firms, and they have the really high quality material. Before, all the "Bigshots" attended NFA/ Tkalec AG auctions/ Bank Leu events....

I was an early bidder on the Zodiacs and dropped out when the bids began to fly. I never went back to see who won.

I wonder if the Banking Executive who keeps sending me emails asking for my bank account # so that he can deposit my share of the estate of a prince is, in fact the same prince.

Edit: Has there been a discussion of sniping auctions here?

I predict that he will offer to wire you the money. All he needs is your bank account numbers to do that. Once he has that he drains your account. Also popular is to send you a check for more than he offered and asks you to send part of the money he gave you to someone else. You send the requested money and his check bounces leaving you with a huge hole in your bank account and large bounced check charges. Proceed with caution and run what he offers by the folks here.

Yes, several threads. And as you might guess, there was never a consensus on good or bad. I for one use sniping software wherever I can. It keeps me from over-bidding.
