Jean Elsen auction 136 lot 178 has 35 Gallienus coins with several that have critter or demi-critter reverses.

Fantastic beasts and where to find them? On the back of a Gallienus Zoo type!

That's a lovely example of both a creature and zoo-type I'd not come across before, with nicely preserved details of the forepart of the criocamp.

Very cool. About how many animals make up the Gallienus zoo series?

On page 1 of this thread there are some links to webpages devoted to the zoo series. Worth posting them again. The animal count may vary depending on what you think a particular animal is (panther vs tigress, for example)

This FAC link has some handy tables.

Interesting. Seems to be about 10 different animals but some 29 different combinations of animals+deities. Looks like a fun series to collect. I have a few Gallienus coins but none from the zoo.

What a strange and interesting beast on a really cool coin. I just may have to look into this series.

Much better examples than mine on this thread (Cucumbor's are amazing!)... but I love the centaur - it is one of my favorites. Found it in a 3 for $10 bin... which makes it extra nice.. S20180302_0006.jpg S20180302_0005.jpg

Thank you for the welcome.. I have been lurking for awhile and decided I had better post something. I am new to coin collecting and ancients. So lots to learn (which is a lot of fun) and no one to talk to about it.. so I hope to find a home here... cheers!
