"Cheap coin but a great look" is where it's at, man! You've gotta love those!

(And I agree, in this particular case.)

Thanks to Mike at ToughCoins for telling me about this thread. Love the looks of these types of coins. Got one on the way that I will post later but here are some of mine....

Those are lovely. Particularly the 1822 half and the '92-S and '79-CC Morgans.

We've drifted a little. I bear some of the blame.

A true CircCam must have contrast. That's what the term "cameo" implies. A lot of the stuff posted here (including plenty I've posted myself) is merely "crusty", not truly CìrcCam.

"Crusty" is essentially any coin with a nice, original undisturbed patina (and by "patina", I refer to not only that term the way collectors of ancient coins do, but also to toning in general).

Crusty coins are nice. But not all "crusties" are CircCams!

I don't mind seeing both, but thought I should make the distinction clear.

I may need to attempt a peace dollar set with every single coin all CirCam!

Good luck with that! I am attempting that very thing right now, and after going through at least 3,000 coins on eBay the other day, I saw maybe five with the right look. Two were perfect in terms of the toning, but had rim nicks that were too extreme. One had other issues. Of the other two that went into my watch list, one has wretched photos and the other does warrant a second look. It got so that I almost decided to give up on the idea of the Peace dollars in my set having contrasting toning- it would be far easier to go all white UNCs with maybe XF-AU for the keys.

(Peace dollars are one coin that I do like in bright white. But I do want to try collecting them in CircCam ... if I can find 'em!)

Finding CircCam Peace dollars is WAY more challenging than I thought it would be. They're out there, but I would guess that less than 0.01 percent I've seen so far have had the right look.

As of this post, I have two Peace dollars in my Dansco #7172 Silver Dollar Date Set album, and while both are nice, neither has the "crusty" look. I might swap 'em for crustier examples later. (Edit- just one left, now. I just sold one.)

@dwhiz has an awesome NGC F15 1921 with the perfect look. Perhaps he'll share that.

    Good luck.
@lordmarcovan I would only see that if I sold the whole set complete, and I don't think that is going to happen.
But I'll say "never say Never".

I'll second that... they really don't seem very prevalent with that look for some reason.

I think it's got something to do with the lower relief. When I was browsing Peace dollars the other day, searching for CircCams (hey, say that out loud- it has a nice ring to it), I noticed that out of the few I did see, at least 75% of them were 1921 High Relief coins.

She'll be in the mail tomorrow. :)

I just got that "crusty" (but not CircCam) grey beauty from @ToughCOINS and liked it, but flipped it to @dwhiz for his set since I've decided to pursue true CircCams (or as close as I can get) in the Peace dollars. I have little doubt it will be very challenging.

It will replace this one in my set Peace 1922 1.JPG
so I'll just throw it in my silver dollar box

So, while we're discussing 1922 Peace dollars, both crusty and CircCam, I'll ask your opinion of this one, @dwhiz, and that of anyone else who cares to chime in.

It's perfect for the look I'm after, but I haven't quite decided if that bim-bam on the reverse rim is a dealbreaker or not.

They want $22.95 with $2.95 shipping.

I really like the obverse but the reverse not so much.
I personally would pass on it.
But you need to make that decision

I guess I didn't realise how uncommon they were. But thinking back, you're right: almost all the peace CirCams I've seen are 21s! I wonder...

A keen observation! Makes perfect sense.

...I'd pass on that one too. Close but no cigar category.

Yeah, I think I'll pass on that '22-D above, but keep it in my watch list a while.
