I found this 1975 D dime. It looks like the 5 in the date is over a 3. Can anyone else see this or care to give their opinion? There looks cud at the Y in LIBERTY and the 7 looks different in the date as well.
It appears to be deteriorated dies and maybe a little mechanical doubling, no extra value, just interesting. This is the same process that you will see in the 'Poorman's 55 cent" some sell on ebay as a 'doubled die' which it isn't. Jim
I'm guessing the so-called "3" just happens to be outlined by the dirt/grime to the right of the date? When it comes to such things, it is usually wise to ask yourself what is more likely: that you just happen to have discovered the impossible, or if there's a real world explanation for whatever you're seeing. Essentially, consider the basics of Occam's Razor.
Pictures taken with my phone make it hard to see what I'm talking about. With a loupe you can see it. I'm going to invest today in an USB microscope so I can magnify and take better pictures. And I can seem to get that black grime off there with just soap and water and "just in case" I don't want to damage the coin
And I see the supposedly doubled dies they try to sell. I'm new at this but I caught the bug because of a friend and I'm careful and ask questions. And I have a couple of the poorman 55's
Perhaps, sir, you would be better served by first investing in yourself by learning about the minting process and then try to logically explain how such an impossible "error" could have occurred. I'm sorry, but you're chasing ghosts with the 75 over 73 thing.
Useful even if your name isn't Occam, and you don't have a beard. "Ax" yourself, how on earth COULD a "3" get on there. It can't.
You CANNOT do this by looking at coins. You have to read stuff. You have to mentally PROCESS and UNDERSTAND what you're reading. Just looking at coins without knowing the coining process just feeds the mind with fantasies.
I can see that I'm apparently in a place instead of just someone helping and be nice, I get attitude and ridicule. I am new to to this but I will find somewhere else to ask my questions and to learn. I no longer will be a part of this site. I have referenced a lot of questions asked on here before about coins before I ever joined this site.

It is just mechanical doubling. When I began, I felt like that to. Don't get upset. And also, do read up on the minting process. Guide book of the United States mint and the Cherrypicker's guide are good resources. Also the Red and Mega Red books are great.
Nathan, As my mother used to say..Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.. I have been on almost every coin forum, and this is among the best. It may seem 'snapish' at times, but don't let that stop you from learning from the old "grouchy" members as they can have nuggets of knowledge to give also. Most are suffering from Youtube Flu or eBay constipation from people who just want to know how much it is worth. I suspect you are interested in the hows, so you might try it a little longer. jim
Me to, I have been on a lot of coin forums, but use this the most. It is a great one. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, when he says this, he is right
You asked a question and got answers from knowledgeable collectors telling you that your coin wasn't an error, and based on current die making and minting processes it couldn't happen. You came back with a reply saying we weren't looking at it right, in other words, you didn't get the answer you were looking for. Based on your current knowledge of error coins and the minting process, you would be much better off staying on the site and learning as much as possible. However, if you feel you already know enough, then I'm sorry we can't offer anything else.
