I have 2 1970s coins, this one looks like the small date? The other has the low 7, I see the difference.
Hard to tell if there is damage to the 9, The liberty does get weak? But, I think it is a large date.
On the small date the curl of the 9 goes around further. The point at the bottom of the 9 is sharp, and LIBERTY is weakly struck. On the large date the curl on the 9 doesn't close, the point on the bottom of the 9 is blunt, and LIBERTY is well struck.
Thank you!! I just posted a second, better picture and I think I’ve got it! Strong L, weaker iberty, 9 with a curl and point, and the 7 is actually very level with 9 and 0, the photo is deceptive due to the reflection on both?
Your photo looks like a large to me. The curl in the 9 points down not across. The bottom of the 9 is blunt not sharp, and LIBERTY is well struck. Also, the small date is rare. Almost all of them are large dates.
@nhysandra This is where mint mark placement becomes a valuable tool. Uou are unsure,Michael and I are in the same boat. Each one of the working dies that struck your cent had the MM punched in by hand, They usually with die Markers can determine the die that struck them. A lot comes into play here with circulation, But, the die markers never lie. Do you have the reference that I sent you on another thread? Variety Vista? It will show the different die placements for the small date.
