I think that right there is one of the main differences between the old school and the new breed of collectors. Give me booming luster, nice even concentric toning over a blast white fully struck example any day
Yeah, eye appeal + luster for me for sure then everything else. Just my preference. The problem with that preference I've found is that it's very tough to buy from pictures when those two things are your main priorities. I've been after a $2.50 and/or $5 indian for like 6 months and just pass on one after another because I can't trust the pictures. REALLY hoping I can find one or both at Central States coming up.
Odds are in your favor that youll find one. Yea, i buy 99% of my collection at shows. I have purchased a few off CT members and have had good experiences, but you cant learn everything you need to know about a coin through photos. Standing Quarters are a good example of a series i much rather look over in-hand before buying. Ive seen quite a few with an improperly rinsed dip (look). PVC spots, Milky looking spots, weird toning, slight wear on the knee etc. etc.
I like both, but if it's blast white, I don't want to see any traces of a bad rinse. I see it on a lot of white coins.
The lady on the left is graded higher than the lady on the right. She ain't much to look at though. I rather think NGC got that one wrong.
Not sure anyone has posted a 17 S type 1. One of my favorite coin series. What would you grade her at?
I specalize in quarters, favorite bust be standing liberty, although not doing that good: 1925 1927 1929 1930
