I think everyone has already made good points. I'll just say this, and someone else might have already mentioned this, but kids that make fun of, or judge, other kids for any reason by calling them geeks or any other name are just insecure, have low-self esteem, and talk bad about other kids to make them feel better about themselves.

To me Coin collecting and Cherrypicking is like astronomy. I look through my microscope and never know what I will find. I love it.

Also I am a Tech ( sometimes called a Geek ) and I know how much money can be made off the people that call Techs Geeks, So I hope they throw thier coins my way too.

Hold over from the past is what coin collecting being a Geeky or dumb thing was considered. This was a long time ago in my past for sure. Way, way back the only kids that collected coins, stamps, etc were normally those that did other stupid things like play the piano, get good grades in school, go to the library and all sorts of other non heroic things. Those kids seldom played sports so they were just wierdos. Later in life I found the sport heros delivering mail, stocking shelves at stores, changing my oil at gas stations, etc. And those strange kids that just wanted to learn and have hobbies like coin collecting. Not always true but in my neighborhood most became doctors, attorneys, engineers and other just dumb, high paying, great jobs.

The latest flow of coinage with State Quarters, Presidential Dollars, way to many Commemoratives has made coin collecting and educational hobby and it now takes a person with a little more than a playing hide and seek mentality to be involved this hobby.

The moral of that is to ignor the ignorant.

    Let's hope not!!!

It's probably true that coin collectors are attracted more to intellectual pursuits than the average person. But of course all generalizations about people are wrong. Those who never read and never get beyond TV and video games won't understand those who do.

In that case, being a geek sounds like being in a heavy metal band. Cool.

I consider myself a nerd and to some extent a technology geek. I like linguistics and English literature, and that's pretty nerdy. But then again, I participate in messenger bike events downtown, listen to hardcore and punk music, and have spent tons of money on my full-sleeve tattoos over the years. I consider those things to be less nerdy. :)

The moral of the story is - don't listen to people like that. Hobbies like ours stimulate the mind, and people who don't have smarts don't make it in this world (unless you're a brain-dead celeb like this young lady - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juOQhTuzDQ0 - but that's a whole other issue!).

I look at it like this. While my friends are collecting cars and quads and boats, and ultimately severe debt, I'm collecting money. No matter how you look at it, it's a smarter choice to collect money than it is to collect debt. Now who's uncool?

    Coinlover The Coin Collector

nobody at my school thinks collecting coins in nerdy, at least i think. i always bring something in to show all my friends and the people i talk to. jusr today i brought in some kennedy halves a a few susin b anthonies. they said where did you get these? i said the bank, 50 cents for the halves and a dollar each for the suzies. they say really! :eek:i thought these were rare!:goof: lol. i don't say i collect coins though becuase i kinof like to keep it a secret. only my true friends know i collect. i do this for secirity reasons i guess. other than that if you show the kids some of your coins, or just some strange coins they have never seen before they will think it is neat and even start a collection. its better spending your money on coins now when we're still kids. i think i would rather keep a set of mercury dimes i spent half my money on, instead of buying a really cool vidieo game that your going to beat a dozen times and sell it for half you bought it for. at least with coins you can get your money back, or get alot more than what you paid!:kewl: so either way collecting coins is not stupid. buying junk that in a few years will break or you'll get tired of is stupid. i'm putting my money to work for me. i don't really care what other people do. you just have to think positive when kids put you down.

Cool is over rated. Geek is where it's at. I've met geeks that have been places, met people, and done things that many sports figures can only dream of. Geeks power alot of stuff.. and they don't need validation from the masses to know that they "count". I've seen the jocks I went to HS with around town.. I wish them happier futures ..but on average.. they have not done so well. Luckily the tint on my 80 thousand dollar car(edit.. It's not worth that now.. I got it used.. I'm not a complete idiot) has kept them from wanting to steal my pencils again.

Sociologically speaking, they are acting out because they know that their braun will fade long before your brains... and they know that you CAN get braun.. but they can never get brains. I'm not hatin'.. it's just the nature of reality (and the reality of nature).

Find as many reasons as you want to place yourselves outside of Geekworld.. I've seen what's inside and I'm trying to get further IN.

Oh really ??? Here's what you tell Mr. Fabulous... I'm a Class V whitewater kayaker and rafter. For knuckleheads like him, I have a simple 3-step program :
    1. hop in a boat
    2. peel out of the eddy
    3. follow my line downstream
I'll help retrieve his remains at the bottom of the drop. But just remember the #1 rule of whitewater :

If you die, we split up your gear ! :D
