They are still cashable at face value at any UK bank and I believe will remain so for quite a while yet. Shops are entitled to refuse them, but I believe many will still take them but not all at once.

How about the large 50p, are they still good? I have a few of those, also. And some large 10p.

Check out Numista. If it does not say demonetized it should be spendable. For example:

    Cashable for ever.
I`m still taking pre decimal to the bank for face value.
I bought 8.8kg of Two Shilling coins on eBay for £54 and £5 shipping.
£80 I got  £21 of free money.

The old large 50p, 10p and 5p are cashable but you need to have an account at the bank and they want them in £5 bags generally. It does vary from one company to another and some may not take them at all. Barclays seems to n the above rules.

They will also take the pre-decimal florins (at 10p each) and shillings (at 5p each) on the same basis. But not the sixpences and halfcrowns - I think the maths is too difficult for the post-decimal brain!

    Paddy,
I take mine to the Post Office, no account required.
I change Half Crowns and 5 Shilling Crowns too.
All tatty currency notes including 10 Shilling notes.
I bag everything up and the manager does not even check them, he trusts me as he was not around in pre decimal days.
They all get sent to Cardiff.
Sixpence coins go in bulk on eBay for people who have vintage slot machines.

Thanks for that info - I will use. I think I may have a problem with my local PO as it is a tiny insert in a small stationery shop that is about to go bust I fear. Next closest is an insert in a WHSmiths - can't see that working either. I will have to travel further afield for a decent size PO. Here's hoping!

PS - what do you get for sixpences? I have lots...

I`ve not listed any for a while but I use to list 100 Sixpences, £0.99 start and free shipping and they went for around £10-£12.
Put in the title ideal for vintage slots and brides shoes:cool:

Just an update @daveydempsey - my local shop Post office certainly won't change them. They seemed surprised I asked and rather curtly told me: "It's obsolete money - nobody will accept them"! I tried the big Post office in a nearby town - still no go, though slightly more polite about it.
I have little hope of the next nearest as it is an insert in a WHSmiths. Looks like I will be driving a long way to get a PO to take any!

I would but by the time we had paid for the postage there wouldn't be much left for either of us! :)
And surprising as it may be for those in the US of A, Yorkshire is quite a long drive from Devon.

    @PaddyB
If I`m ever down there I`ll let you know and give you face value for it and cash it in at home.
I do visit Devon, Cornwall, Somerset about 2-3 times a year on business.(I only get a days notice I`m going though)
My Post Office is a village version, albeit the largest village in England, it serves quite a big area.

As I was born in York I am quite well aware of that. :)
As a kid in the early '60s we drove down to Devon for our summer holidays one year. Back then it required an overnight stay.
