Some of the kids in my school say that all coin collectors are geeks and that they are weak. Is that stupid or what?
Pay no attention to them. Collecting coins requires that one has to use their brain more than their brawn. Try not to let it bother you and try to find friends who also like to collect things like sports cards, etc.
I refer to myself as a coin geek but I'm surely not a geek. Who cares what they say? As stated earlier coin collecting requires knowledge and spills well over into silly things like history that influences are modern world everyday. Want to know what a geek is? The kid that has to have every new game on the market for entertainment. My computer has NO games on it but then, I'm a coin geek!
I collect coins, but also play soccer and Varsity Lacrosse. Its a fun hobby, and some of the brawny kids like the hobby of juicing! Everyone has their tastes in hobbies, and dont take offense to the insecure kids.
Hey, im fairly, um, well known in my school. Ive played on traveling teams in sports since i was old enough to. I play baseball for 2 different teams (local traveling team, and im the captain of my high school team). Yeah, im considered one of the cool kids in my school. Im a huge coin nerd. Oh well, people know it, and they don't care. The only people who say stuff like that arn't very cool themselves.
Pshh, quite frankly, those kids are ignorant. I bet they do not even have any hobby! It is about the hobby, and the love of collecting. Don't let them steal that from you, and if they try to, ask them if they ever collected anything in their lives.
everyone knows I collect coins at school. And most people used to make fun of me for it. But once I joined wrestling and won city for my weight division, people pretty much stopped. What i'm trying to say, is that coin collecters dont have to be geeks, and dont have to be week either.
Don't worry about them. Even if you are a self-styled 'geek' (in a good way! ie, star trek fan. etc.), as I am. Maybe this motivational poster would help? A friend of mine made it, its been my desktop background for a while now.
I know of a few, and it has been mentioned a couple of other times that I am aware of, bodybuilders/MMA fighters/power lifters who are "coin geeks" in addition to their respective sports. I for one am a former competitive power lifter and have been in a handful of army combative contests at local levels ( I could never make it past our command level ) but I love coin collecting, although not quite as geeky as some in here, although I am learning and trying to be
Yes, it's pretty stupid. It's as ignorant as saying that all jocks are dumb. If you enjoy something, you should do it and not worry about what other people say. Then, later on when you are my age, your wife and children can ridicule you for collecting coins. But they won't think you're weak!
No that isn't stupid....they just don't know any better. I don't get too many people calling me nuts but some do wonder why I would pay over face value for something. Family and friends have always seemed interested. I'm the type that when I'm talking with someone I try to know what their interests are in and that is the topic I try to hit on. Then if they ask what I'm into I try to go over my businesses and maybe coin to let them know me alittle better. Most guys I know think that its cool and some even think I'm rich (ha). The girls that I'm around don't seem to care either way. It has never been an issue with anyone I've ever known and I hope it stays that way. Speedy
Real good point here Luc87 and seeing that you're from Winnipeg does anyone play hockey up there? I've seen all the "jocks" comment on their love of the hobby and when I was younger I played hockey. I was a defensman for many years actually and no one called me a "hockey geek". Actually they hated going into the corners with me and NOBODY had a problem with coin collecting. Those that have to comment on your "geekiness" are the insecure ones. Seems you have some fairly "tough geek" friends here.
As you age being a 'geek' at something becomes a compliment. It's sort of like labeling you the resident expert on whatever the topic is. think about it, whenever you have car trouble who is the first friend you call? the car geek. I am a computer geek and it doesn't bother me one bit.
No way is it near stupid my friend. This hobby not only educates, but it is fun and can also make you a buck or two if you are interested in that. You are not a geek for being a coin collector. But, on the other hand, nothing is wrong with being a geek at all. A lot of famous people were probably geeks. Take Jimmy Hoffa, was probably a geek in some sort of area, and look where that got him, oh wait, bad example. Better yet, just don't let it get to you man. Phoenix
