An interesting collection would be the various bust types of Probus. Some of them are quite hard to come by, however. This one is one of my favorite Probus bust types. Show off your Probus coins! The more of the various bust types, the merrier! Probus, AD 276-282 Roman billon antoninianus; 3.79 g, 22.1 mm Rome, AD 277-280 Obv: IMP PROBVS P F AVG, radiate bust right in consular robe, eagle tipped scepter in right hand Rev: ROMAE AETER, temple, statue of Roma seated facing inside; in exergue, R * A Refs: RIC 183; Cohen 533; RCV 12027 var.
I recognize four types of Probus busts: Plain: Military: Consular: ...and expensive ones I can't afford.
I think Doug used to collect Probus. Or maybe it was Martin. I'm gettin' old so don't fault me too much. Here are just a few of the ones I have both left and right facing.
If I ever dive into Roman coins with anything more than passing interest it would be the coins of Probus. So far I have a few of his coins. These two are my favorites.
That was Martin. I never specialized in Probus but I adopted quite a few when they were easy to get cheap 20 years ago. Another military: Not as plain: Consular with 'special' CONSIII legend: If you want a challenge, show me a military or consular bust right or a plain bust left. For those with a lot more money than I, there is the military bust with horsehead: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3108081
Wow, that 2nd coin is tremendous. I must have it and am prepared to give you a mere fraction of what you paid for it. It’s a good deal do not overlook it.
I'm not sure what bust type my one would be, maybe the Doug category of "not as plain" Probus AD 276-282. Rome Antoninianus Æ silvered 23mm., 4,96g. IMP PROBVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right, with Medusa on breastplate / ROMAE AETER, hexastyle temple within which statue of Roma holding Victory or Palladium and sceptre, in exergue, R crescent Γ. good very fine RIC 185; C. 530; Venèra 1401-1418
i've been looking and bidding on him but he's quite a popular fella right now it seems..so he's yet to grace my collection.
The first has " Restitut Orbis " on reverse, while the second has " Clementia " there. Have no idea if they are scarce now ?
Great @Roman Collector ... I remembered that I liked my Probus, but now disappointed it is not sinister! Besides, I now see that @TheRed 's coin proves that the HORSE on these coins are not separated starting at the withers through the girth like MINE is! I keep wondering if the head and forelegs are just going to WALK AWAY! RI Probus 276-282 CE Ant 21mm captive on ground Riding Horse
As the Norse god Loki is my witness I swear I bought the coin for $2,000 from highrating_lowprice, and am willing to sell it for 25% of the price I paid.
To take up the challenge set by Doug a little.... Mantled.... Common leftie Scarcer rightie Common rightie Scarcer leftie G/< created a great page on Probus bust type here:- http://probvs.net/probvs/busts/b-bus-bustforms.html
