You know I love toned gold. I have the opportunity to buy this coin. I love it, but it is pricey. What are your thoughts on it, good or bad?
How much of a premium is the seller asking for? That would be my deciding factor, along with how badly am I in love with it. I'm horrible at grading gold, but if I had to guess, I'd say 62-63? Is that (or the actual grade of the coin) a grade you want/need/would be happy with at the price being asked? Only the Witten knows....
The coin is in a PCGS holder. It looks like an AU55 to me, but I question whether it may have been called AT. In any case, I would chase a coin like that with extra money . . . how much extra? certainly a $250 premium to the grade, perhaps even $500, depending on how it looks in person.
ummm... I definitely should wear my glasses. I amend my grade guess to AU53. Thanks to @ToughCOINS for making me look again.
Very handsome. Dunno how much of a premium I'd pay (not much- I'm tightfisted when it comes to toning premiums), but I like that one quite a bit.
Do I like the look ? Yes, I think it's gorgeous. However, this would be the key in answering the question. And I say that, not so much for your benefit because I'm pretty sure you already know it, but for the benefit of those who do not know it. And for those folks, what I'm talking about is that that coin, even though it looks that way in those pictures, in hand it almost certainly does not. Yes, if you held it in hand with the light (and maybe even a specific kind of light) reflecting of it just so at one specific angle, it would look that way. But change the light, change the angle even a tiny bit - and it's not gonna look that way. It may even look radically different.
He sent me a few "in hand" pictures, and you are right, it looks nothing like this. He was in his car in daylight though, which always makes coins looked washed out. I can tell you the coin is more than a $500 premium, but I am still leaning towards getting it. I just love toned gold, and this is the best $10 toner I've seen.
And I would have been utterly amazed if your answer had been anything different. Now don't go trying to rationalize, that's a trap all too many fall into. It either is or it isn't - there is no in between. Typically, when people look at coins like this they fall in love with pictures - not coins. And if you're gonna pay $500 premiums - then you most definitely need to fall in love with the coin and not a picture ! Are there toned gold coins that are worth $500 premiums ? Most emphatically yes ! But by the same token there are far more of them that are not ! And I can guarantee you NO picture is !
The only way I am buying it is if he lets me return it if I don't like the in hand look. Almost all of my gold toners look terrible in daylight, so I didn't expect this one to look any better like that.
If you want it badly enough, but want to assure yourself you will be happy after paying such a premium, ask him for a buy-back price.
I figured it as 55 straight. I don’t see that getting an at designation as I’ve had quite a few with that deep copper colored toning. Often times it looks good in hand too. I just sold a $2.5 lib that was toned that color. I like it and hope it looks as good in hand
That's one of the best gold toners I've seen you post especially if it looks anything like that in hand. Grab it unless you think the price is absurd. Anything less than absurd and it should be on its way to you pronto bro!
