I found a 1965 clad Quarter and it is thicker than a normal quarter. I don't know if it plated with silver. I can't find out any information on the quarter. I am new at coin collecting and from my research I done the Neodymium magnet slide test and the tissue test and weighed the quarter. The magnet appeared to react the same when I tried it on other silver coins as on the 1965 quarter. It appeared to pass the tissue test as well and the quarter weighs 6.38 grams. I have attached photos. Any help with this coin would be appreciated.
From what I have found a 1965 clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams. Why do you think this quarter weighs 6.38 grams? Any information would be appreciated.
I am not sure if it is silver or not. I just put other silver quarters along with the 1965 clad quarter and it looked the same as other silver quarters. Thank you for responding. The magnet slide test appeared to be the same on the 1965 Quarter as a regular pre 1964 silver quarter.
Maybe struck on Thick Planchet.. Yours could be within tolerance. Here is one I have a little bit heavier -
If you can see the copper core then it is not silver. It's Clad. You can clearly see it on your Quarter!
Okay thank you very much for the information. I trying to learn about coins. Would you send this coin to PCGS or NGC?
If the weight is actually 6.38 grams then it IS struck on an overweight planchet (not silver) and it is well out of maximum tolerance weight by almost half a gram. It IS a legitimate error, but probably not worth having slabbed. If you insist on having it slabbed I'd wait till ANACS is running a special and slab it with them for the lower cost. I don't think the extra cost for PCGS or NGC could be recooped.
Has your scale been calibrated recently? Weigh a couple regular clad quarters. If your scale is accurate, they should come very close to 5.67 gms. This is a quick and easy check.
