Good question, considering youcan still get them for $35.95 + S&H from the Mint.

Ah ha, After looking at the most recent issue of Coin World magazine it appears that someone found a 2007-d Sackie with edge lettering. That would do it.

Educate me. How would that affect the value of 2006 coins, minted before the edge lettering machines were in operation?

I am completely stumped. Some of the bidders are "smart" enough to know better, yet still bid on these at such a high level. A real head scratcher to me....Mike

You were correct using the "smart" in quotes.
I presume that was a sign of scarcasm?

i guess it's time to start buying those Sac rolls from the mint and re-selling them on ebay...

    any other ideas?

    Yes and no.

What I meant by it was when I saw the OP's post, I immediately thought "must be a bunch of coin/ebay noobs", but what I saw was some pretty experienced ebayers bidding (what I consider to be) ridiculous amounts. To wit:

Bidder / Bid Amount / Bid Time

    gaspumpjockey( 56) US $180.27 Nov-26-07 20:40:46 PST
    friendly_eagle( 2227) US $177.77 Nov-26-07 22:28:54 PST
    1greatbidder( 1672) US $172.00 Nov-26-07 15:31:58 PST
    treasuregalleryinc( 10615) US $172.00 Nov-26-07 19:07:21 PST

    treasuregalleryinc( 10615) US $151.00 Nov-20-07 09:09:31 PST

Now I see what you meant.
Yup, it appears that I am also out of the loop on this one.

focus guys! a forum of experts here someone should be able to figure out why 8 people bid 2 rolls of 2006 Sacs up to $180.

Sac Dollars are no longer released into circulation and are only available directly from the Mint in rolls that are sold at a premium, which are now sold out. Two rolls of these are 50 coins, so they are brining about $3.50 each. That price is pretty much in line with what most of the Sac Dollars bring that are in original Mint rolls.

Being original rolls, there may also be the chance at finding a few ultra grade coins. High grade Sacs tend to bring fairly strong money as very few of them grade above MS-66.

You can still buy the 2007 rolls of Sacs from the mint. Is there strong reason to think those are going to skyrocket in value from $35 a roll to $90 when the mint stops selling them?

    Or is 2006 special?

Hint - some are insane collectors that collect the packaging and the receipt. I know I do. And that's the reason why a similar question was asked. ;)

Hmmm. Let me take a stab at why people might put a premium on these.

2006-D had a total mintage of 2,800,000. All coins struck were sold for a premium to the public in Mint Sets, bags, and rolls.

If we assume ALL the coins were sold in rolls and none were every opened (both untrue), that would leave only a total number of rolls at 56,000. Now consider all the mint sets and mint bags also sold. Also consider all the rolls broken up to get individual coins.

The number of 2006-D rolls is some number WAY below 56,000. We talk a lot about mintages on this site and that looks pretty good for a modern that isn't precious metal..

    Just a thought.
