Cameo coins in Vienna will very likely be your best local shop. Annandale and Vienna Coin shows come several times a year and Fredericksburg has the big state show I believe.

CoinCorgi Tell your dog I said hi!

He's asking which state is most favorable tax-wise in which to buy coins!

Can I get a resale certificate for Virginia?

I had a Virginia tax number for awhile. You just are supposed to collect sales tax on your Virginia retail sales though it seems like there’s hardly any true retail customers. Everyone is supposedly a dealer

Haha, yep. Sorry for not making that more clear. Just curious which state is more tax friendly when shopping. Been awhile since I really had to worry about state tax on coins.

Unless you're just buying small amounts of bullion it really doesn't matter, it's such a small part of the sales price when it actually applies that you're going to cost yourself more running all over trying to avoid it

Might try printing out this site and giving it to them

If that doesn't work then I think I agree with JeffB, contact the state Internal Revenue office and tell them these folks are collecting sales tax in violation of the law, and that they are probably not remitting it to the state. The first part might not get their attention, but the second part, that the state isn't receiving it would probably cause them to take notice.

Just an inkling of quirks to look forward to once the Market Place Fairness Act or something similar is finally passed into law. Have no doubt its coming sometime in the near future. Every seller subject to the rules and regs of over 10,000 different taxing jurisdictions.

I actually just read that Virginia passed a law that made purchase of coins exempt for State Tax. Anyone in the area that can attest? I've had my coins delivered to APO for quite some time and haven't paid any taxes whatsoever. Would be nice to keep it rolling.

As a side note: I will be there in time for the Annandale Coin Show in July. Looks like a great time!

Yes, I heard the same thing but I have not had the chance to test it yet. I mostly buy from out of state as the local dealers are not that friendly.

So I'm in NoVa, getting ready to buy an ounce of platinum for $980. Sales tax there is 6%, bringing the total to $1038.80. Do I wait for platinum to go up $20, so I can get it for $1000? Do I ask the seller to bump up his premium another $20?

    It's the opposite of the time-honored "$999.99" price-point strategy.

It's a new tax rule, and it's completely arbitrary. But I repeat myself.

I agree it's silly all these states are applying these random minimum purchase amounts instead of just excluding all of it. Better than nothing though

Add a silver eagle to the order and put it over $1000. It has to be $1000 for the ORDER not for the individual coin. That way you don't have to wait and hope platinum goes up BEFORE you buy it.
