I will be attending, arriving Thursday afternoon, staying at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas. I am speaking Friday morning, and leaving later Friday afternoon. I am signed up to be an exhibit judge. Most of my time on the floor will be there.

My "Money Talks" presentation is From the Mint to the Moon with John Leonard Riddell. It is based on my April 2014 Numismatist article, "The Riddle of Riddell."

I wish I could be there. The late winter ANA shows
are very relaxed and friendly. While the summer
shows are 2-3 times larger I like these better. Most
of the popular national dealers are there along with
many local/regional attendees. Cheers and best wishes
    to all who attend!!!

I hope it is a better show than the last ANA in Dallas. A dealer friend told me there were 4X more dealers than public.

While I realize the purpose for most dealers attending
any show is to make a profit, there is a lot to be said for
chit-chat with customers and future customers. As dealers
and customers we shouldn't forget to encourage the YN's.

That is probably why they dropped down to a mid-winter show from the big summer show.

Don't believe everything you hear from a coin dealer. Literally, it would mean 85 people from the public for the 330 dealers. That is simply not true.

Now, indeed, there was a Zombie convention going on at the same time and they had way more people, wrapped down the halls and waiting to get it, which the ANA did not. But on the other hand, that just makes the buyer's position stronger, so what is your complaint?

The mid-winter shows have always been weaker than the annual summer show. The historical trend may be against them. There has been some sociological handwringing that coin shows and conventions are dead because of eBay and all that. I do not see it.

Coin collecting is the kind of hobby that appeals to loners, as opposed, say to football or NASCAR. But people do like getting together anyway.

The ANA has "always" had two shows, since 1980. I mean for me, 1980 is like yesterday in my active memory. But, my daughter was born in 1979, so for someone her age, there was "always" two shows a year. The summer show is still the Big One.

With the show being relatively close to the ANA
headquarters it's a shame that the ANA does not
load up a U-Haul truck and try to sell their dupes
of books and auction cats. They could raise some
much needed funds for the library. This would have
been great this past summer at the Denver show.
They had a "Golden Day" on Sunday at the headquarters
and they really could have sold some books then.

It was a former ANA president. He does all he can to cheerlead for the ANA.

I was a chairman at two ANA mid-winters in SLC.

Attendence was down - especially compared with the prior year (2015). I was there both Wed (laying down table runners) Thu and Fri. Some quiet periods, surely, but never zombie.

Portland also had tremendous pent up demand. It was the first national show there in years.

While the PNNA yearly show draws good crowds, the dealers are mostly PNW... somewhere here or on CCF I posted an analysis of the dealers and there were 3 or 4 from CA and one from ID...

The 2015 ANA show did better, but a lot of East Coast dealers skipped because it was hard to travel to.

And that is who the ANA caters to.

Why are you surprised (that the primary financial viability of a show comes from dealers)?

If you held a show and no dealers showed up, you wouldn't be able to pay for the room. And it wouldn't be successful for the public.

If you held a show and only dealers showed up, you would be able to pay for the room. And it would be successful for at least a large portion of the dealers.

Sure there is a lot of symbiosis... some dealers are wholesale only... and some dealers are almost exclusively retail sales... but most are both. Same thing as the best shows are those with both dealers and the public.

What are you speaking on Friday morning?
I think this will be a great venue for the ANA Show.
I plan on attending Friday or Saturday.

"From the Mint to the Moon with John Leonard Riddell." Riddell was chief melter of the New Orleans Mint. He was also the first working scientist to publish a science fiction story. He made two exploratory journies into Texas, the second as part of a group seeking out Jim Bowie's lost "San Saba" silver mine. And more...

Thursday, I bought a Hungarian 6 Kreutzer billon silver from 1849 for $20. I saw some Military Payment Certificates and some medieval French, but nothing called my name.

Most of my attention was given to grading the Exhibits I was assigned.

Thursday, I judged the Geography exhibits. Friday was a busy day for me, speaking and then serving on the Best of Show committee. (I exhibited a few times in the past, but not this year.) Once my work was done, I was free to walk the floor, to shop and visit. I spent almost an hour with Allan Berman.

The TNA was very nice in find me some of their "Texas Navy" medallions. I also found a Texas Navy warrant for sale at good price. This one was filled out an cancelled. You don't see that often because Pres. Sam Houston reneged on them because he distrusted seamen. He hated the Navy for their successes for spoiling his plans. (But we in the Texas Maritime Regiment are steadfast in our loyalty.)

I finally bought a coin for my avatar. The image at left came from a Tony Fein VCoins listing. I was researching the great fairs of Champagne for a Celator article. I passed on this and regretted it ever since. Soon after the article ran, I spoke at a conference in Calgary and learned from museum curator Geraldine Chimirri-Russell about the 3-D images on ancient Celtic coins. This coin, from 1000 years later, also aligns 3-D when viewed obliquely. I found one at Kenn Hollister's Moneta.

A couple of years ago, six of us from the Texas State Guard were assigned on state active duty to work as clericals for the Domestic Operations task force. Our superiors were Army and Air National Guard. None of them knew about Military Payment Certificates. I was able to pick up some rags at local show, but this was my opportunity to find Premium Quality certified graded 66 and 67 examples. I got some high denomination early issues and some low denomination late issues. So, I have a pretty good run of examples now.
