1943 S steel Lincoln

    Found this one tucked behind the velvet in my grandfather's coin box. Looks like MD on date in the 43 but the 4 he a chunk missing top and bottom and mint mark looks doubled? Reverse in very good shape !

    I suspect struck through grease.

    Steve think it would be ok too clean this with just soap and water?

    Never use soap and water. A soak in Pure acetone. (In a well ventilated area) Then, a rinse under tap water high pressure. then a final soak in distilled water. Let dry on a cotton towel. Never rub the coin. This may or may not help. Good luck.

    AS far as any variety is concerned, you can look here.

    The look of your MM if it was a variety would be an S/S west.
    There is multiple things going on with your coin. Possible die deterioration, Struck thru debris, environmental damage etc.
    I would spend some time going through this site to help familiarize yourself. http://www.error-ref.com/ All of these things I have pointed out can have an effect on the way a variety is struck.
