This thread is going to go downhill really fast. Mods, you should probably just lock it now. Fair warning......
I fear you're right even though this shouldn't be the case. If it's acceptable for a certain individual to copy designs and simply change the date, it must be equally okay for anyone and everyone else. If not acceptable for everyone else, it is therefore unacceptable for said individual regardless of whatever reasons and/or excuses may be given by those who happen to like or collect his products.
I'll give this thread a few hours for the mods to shut it down. @ToughCOINS @chrisild @desertgem If they don't, I'll jump in.
So you're tagging them even before anything that can rightly be considered unacceptable or confrontational has been said? We've had many threads like this in the past, including those stretching into the double digits page-wise, so I'm unclear on what's different about this one. Perhaps I've missed something and there's a reason why such threads have been scarce as of late? Honest question.
There is now a "Post your Dan Carr here and nowhere else" thread, and the anti-Carrs like me just don't go there. The rest of them can worship him all they like. It's conveniently wrapped up in a single thread.
But that also means there is no reason to discuss the question (whether it is legal to mint such pieces) once again. Obviously there is no simple answer ... Christian
Okay... I see where you're going with this. Thanks for clarifying. Still, if it's okay for one side to voice their appreciation, the same should hold true for those not sharing it. JMHO, of course.
Those that voice their praise and appreciation for the tokens usually use different words (rules wise) than those opposing such.
That's funny.... I distinctly recall plenty of more colorful language coming from the fanhood as well as those lacking their appreciation.
Technically they weren’t still minting silver in 1966. So faker than fake. I agree it should be illegal
I just checked his list and did not see a Fantasy Overstrike for a 1966 Peace Dollar. It doesn't even look like a DCARR Piece.
Who said anything about dcarr? I know I didn't. It's just a non silver cheap worthless fantasy issue token.
Well, @Andy1939 knows it's not a Carr piece, see here. And to me at least, the term "token" implies that it has a certain value, as in "good for ...", which this piece does not. Christian
Counterfeits with odd dates on them ? OK, let's go back a ways, about 13 years - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1906-1908-walking-liberty-silver-dollar-not-a-half-dollar.6848/ And if ya want you can check this link as well, more examples of the same - http://coinauctionshelp.com/Silver_Bullion.html#.Wn77LSXwaM8 Over the years I've seen pictures posted here showing ASEs dated 1918, 1919, 1921 - you pick the date and it's probably been posted here. And they've been posted different places too, ebay, and various websites. And not just ASEs, AGEs too, and pretty much every other kind of coin you can think of, modern and classic. There's literally no end to the stuff people will come up with to try and get your money and make it their money - one way or the other. And not everybody that buys these things does so thinking they are real, though do exactly that. Others know they're real but buy them anyway - just because. So yeah, it's an old, old idea, been around a long time. People will come up with all sorts of ways to make and sell counterfeit coins. And calling them fantasy pieces - well, that's just a euphemism to make the folks buying these things, even though they know they are counterfeits, feel better about what they are doing. Change the name and magically the whole idea changes. But to me, a spade is and always will be a spade.
I get stuff like this from dealers junk bins at five for a dollar and place them in my counterfeit type coin collection. I only need one of each type so the only ASE I have is a worn magnetic 1906.
That 'O' in 'ONE' on the reverse is familiar - looks more like a 'D' - I bought two fakes on eBay a few years ago, two different dates, but identical bogus reverses w/ the funny looking 'O' - I got a refund, got to keep the fakes but ratted him out anyway - neodymium magnet test (fast slide) confirmed my suspicions - that seller had dozens listed, had sold dozens and shortly thereafter, multiple negative feedbacks and fake claims started showing up in his seller profile - a few weeks later, his coins were gone and his account was gone
