Returning an item on ebay...

I initiated return, seller accepted. I got a free return label. I printed it and put it on the box. Now what do I do? Just take it to the post office and that's it?

That's what I would do. If the postal clerk needs something else he/she will let you know.

You can just drop the prepaid package off, or you can walk to the desk and have the clerk manually check it into the system and you get a receipt. Some post offices will absolutely refuse to do so, because whoever is managing the PO is a jerk. But most will. If you are returning an item and you definitely want to make sure you cover all your bases, I'd absolutely make the clerk put it in manually (because sometimes it won't ever get scanned into the system until the day it gets delivered.)

Tell them you need a receipt to be covered by a return policy if they seem hesitant and thank them for helping you out.

 

Would it be better to forget their free label and just pay for return postage myself?

 

I am trying to mark as shipped back, but tracking number on return label is not accepted, it says that number is already in their system, I need to enter another?!

 

Why? The label is already paid for. Why waste your money...

I'd say it's possible that the item has already been scanned into the system. Sometimes it takes a bit to show up on eBay's system, though. I'd check the USPS website tracking here and get text updates for delivery confirmation.

 

Use the one that is provided. It is free! And, since you already printed it, the number was automatically entered into their system. Just drop it off, and you are good to go. You will get a refund when it is delivered.

 

Give it to the carrier that delivers to your house. You can go on line and request a pick up. You don't even have to go out. BTW, the carrier will scan it when it's picked up.

 

Yes, when the return label is created by the seller, it goes into eBay's & the USPS's
tracking system. My wife has had to return clothes & shoes with NO problems.
I don't think I have ever had to return any coins.

 

If something of real big value registered insured mail!

 

Registered mail is a pain in the butt, and takes 3x as long to get there. Sending it priority with tracking, signature required is a better way to go, and was told as much by the post office.

 

I was told by the PO that they do not guaranty any thing but registered mail! Check it out, I would not send any thing of great value with out registered mail!

 

That’s simply not true. They gave you bad information. Registered is the safest, but if other methods are insured properly and they get lost you’ll get the payout

All registered mail is insured, just as priority with signature confirmation is. But for a limited amount. If they value of the package is more than the basic insurance, you pay up on either one. And I never received a return receipt. You may be able to request one, but not sure. The only difference between priority with signature confirmation and registered is that as your package is moving from station to station, someone actually has to sign to take possession of the package with registered. So if your package stops at 4 different post offices, 4 different postal employees have to sign for it. This is what can cause the delays. If the correct person is not there to sign for it, it stays with the previous postal employee, until the next one is available.

Trust me. I have had packages take upwards of two weeks to deliver to Florida from Ohio with registered mail. And sit at the same post office for a week. For my money, I will ship priority with signature every time.

 

True but the insurance rates on Priority are considerably higher. Once you get to a $1000 package Registered is cheaper and as the value increases it gets cheaper a lot faster. A $3000 package priority flat rate with insurance and return receipt requested would be $50.30. Registered mail would be $19.35. The priority will get there faster but is more likely to disappear enroute. Registered is slower, but it will get there. I'm not in that much of a hurry, I'd rather save the money and have a safer shipment.

Here is something to ponder... If you print the label from ebay and it gets lost or stolen, will ebay refund you? After all, THEY (aka, the seller) were responsible for return shipping. Thus, they hold the responsibility if it gets lost? I know most ebay questions, but I am not sure about this. I imagine you would have a pretty good argument, saying you did not have the choice with insurance since the label was provided by them.

 

Almost positive they would. The real question would be would they refund it from their own money or just take the money from the seller?
