    Hiya,

I'm pretty new here and very new at coins and collecting. I'm trying to get some input on an inexpensive loupe. I don't want to spend over 80'ish bucks on one but I want something decent, that isn't very time consuming on setting up like if I want to go through a roll (I don't want to have to change a setting every single time I want to look at some coins. Something that could also be used for pictures as well.

I would like some opinions on an inexpensive set-ups. For a complete set-up I would like to keep it around 150.

I have the Motoz Forced 2 phone and I'm also wondering if maybe the camera Mod might be worth the purchase for it.

I really appreciate the help. I was given a whole ton of coins that have been through several generations but I also enjoy going through coin rolls when I hsve time. So even which books I might should purchase and where? Amazon used books perhaps? Also where I should purchase anything that has to do with storing the coins safely and maybe even more organized. A photo album DIY type ideas?

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate it.

Hi Rachel! This is what I recently purchased and it works plenty fine for looking at fine details. It connects right to your laptop or desktop. I got it off of the Bay $21.00

I'm not qualified to pass judgment on the camera or microscope doohickeys, but loupes like the one @desertgem recommended are good. I've got a good 7x triplet loupe on a lanyard, but will admit to also having and using several cheapo magnifiers.

Wow, that really sucked. I typed a very long post and it didn't save it lol.

Thanks for the input so far.

Okay. So, do the digital microscopes like the one I have linked not work well with coins? I had a stamp collection passed down to me as well and I know nothing about them (impossible for me to see some of them). But, my eye-site seems to be getting worse the older I get too. I'm not saying I'm gonna purchase the linked one, its just this or something like this is what I was thinking. Now, I know some people will say yes and some will say no (most likely), but I would like to know both the good and the bad.

I would like something with pretty decent lighting because most of the time when I'm able to go through coins is when my kiddo is asleep. I would also like something that might do okay with toning and coin colors. I know that there's nothing that will ever be nearly as real as what we see in person (we all probably see colors differently in person than the person sitting next to us anyways), but maybe something as near as I can get. (a grey background?)

Would I need to order any kinds of supplies with a digital microscope? I would love to find something local so I could just go into the store and pick it up. Would be cool if I could say that I just don't like ordering things online but, truth be told I am just slacking in the patience department of life.

Where can I purchase some things locally like gloves and containers etc.?

    Thanks,

    Rachel

I do also plan to get a B&L triplet. Especially since its made right here at home. Hopefully not at the local sweatshop. (kidding... Kinda),

I have a B&L 10x loupe. Very easy to use. I didn't buy the triplet.

I also have a Dino Lite digital microscope. Good brand. A few price points. You can find them on eBay or google CoinZip. He's a Dino Lite dealer. He can make recommendations on the Dino Lite model you need.

PM me if you want more information. I don't want to put his personal detail on the open forum.

As I stated above in my original post, I purchased the one I copied in my post from Ebay for $20.00. It has plenty of light, it's easy to hook up, it has more magnification than you could possibly need, and it has the camera function right on the light. Connected through a USB. It is very similar to what you posted. Unless you intend to do something on professional level, I would think either one would be fine.

P.S. I use it simply to look at my 70-S LMC I get coin roll hunting. My eyes aren't what they used to be either. :0

IMG_20180207_203504.jpg I use a B&L 10x triplet great loupe. I link a Nikon Coolpix high end camera to a mini tripod and set in tungsten light setting and use digital lamps that have filters if i need them. i put them in a 10 & 2 o clock position sometime need extra.Just took this off my tablet with a mini flashlite, not the best just testing this coin. Does it look prooflike?

I've been using a cheap loupe that I finally got fed up with. Based on the reviews that I have read I just ordered a Belomo 10x triplet loupe. It should arrive today.

I've read the reviews on camera attachments and they've been favorable overall

I just want simplicity when it comes to the amount of time it takes to go through a roll. Like the repetitive part if grabbing said coin, placing it in correct spot, fumbling around with zooming in and out for the best picture, taking said picture, and move on to the next one. All of this without having to fidget too much.

So yes, the loupes are great and in definitely gonna order one but I also would like input on digital.

Thanks for the replies and very good information everyone.

Bausch and Lomb is definitely the way to go for your loupe. Most of the literature recommends either 5X, 7X, or at most 10X for numismatics. I have a 10X and love it, but plan to add a 5X to be able to look at a coin from both extremes.

Histman, can you provide some info on the make and model of this? I'd like to look it up on Amazon since I quit using CheatBay.

If variety searching is your thing, you can pick up an optically excellent Eschenbach 10x aplantic (aspherical) for $57. Not only will it last the rest of your life, but your eyes will thank you for it.

As for a "USB microscope", much will depend on your personal expectations. While most may technically get the job done, the quality offered is generally very low. However, if less concerned with imaging than viewing, perhaps this is of little consequence to you.

Hey, could you send it to me as well? I was trying to figure out which is was too. Mac, let me know of you find it on Amazon and if you could link it to me in message that would be awesome. I was reading that some are not compatible with Windows 10. Is this one?

(Tony, they're Snapchat glasses ;) thank you hun.)
