It is probably the user not the camera. Lighting plays a major factor in getting the details.

That's a fair assumption, but in this case it's also, unfortunately, an incorrect one.

On the positive side is that even though the coin isn't what you had hoped, the experience has contributed to your knowledge of this area of the hobby, and can be of use to you going forward as long as you're willing to look at it the right way.
