The more you advertise the deadline, the more we lose. Take pity on the poor man who knows his phone will ring all evening. We should have bid last week and live with what we did but I didn't s why should I expect you to??? I wonder how many last minute bids find bargains and how many overpay for what they win because we just can't let that other guy win our coins?

I guess I'm a little more laid back than most.
I originaly put in 3 bidd Jan. 5th of those I'm 1 of 3, then 4 days ago I bid on 2 more coins of those I'm 1 of 2.
If I win those 2 I'll be happy.
Just thinking about all the phone calls the guy is going to get tonight alone, I suppose that's why I don't work in the public enterprises

I bid fair bids on Jan 4th. Due to Frank's intercession, I raised them after Feb. 1st. Hopefully it will all work out OK for each of us.

After the sale I encourage anyone interested to play 'What were they thinking?' by looking at the prices realized on coins you found interesting and a few you found repulsive. Frank, unlike most sellers, posts not only what a coin sold for but what the high bidder actually bid for that lot. In most of his sales there will be a lot or two where the winner bid twice what he paid and a few where the winner was tied by a bidder whose bid tied but came later. Trying to understand why which coins sold for what they sold for may mystify but trying to figure out why someone bid $500 on a coin the next bidder saw at $100 can be a real head scratcher. See if you can find the lots that showed an ill conceived bidding war where two people both thought a piece of junk was a jewel. At least it will give you something to do while you wait for your winnings to arrive in the mail.

Also check the end of the list for unsold lots and see if you agree those lots were not worth the reserve. Obviously this can be done with any sale but I do really love the extra dimension gained by that extra number telling the full high bid.

Ken Dorney Yea, I'm Cool That Way...

I've never seen so much attention to one of his sales before. While I glanced through it I only bid on three lots.

That strikes me as very understandable. The coins in a small sale like this would mostly appeal to beginner and low end collectors and not to a professional with decades of experience. He almost never has a coin I want inside one of my specialties but has a lot for the people looking for the basics. I say that and then he makes a liar out of me by including something like lot 363 (a Julian of Panonnia). I will be interested in seeing how many people went for that one.

When I checked yesterday, three bids I made a couple of weeks back were still alive. I made a further three bids off the cheap list Frank sent out a few days ago. If I don't win anything, I am so blaming this thread for giving the sale more publicity than it ordinarily would have gotten. Of course, by participating in the thread now I'm complicit in sabotaging myself :D.

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to the results and the post-sale discussion to see what everyone won. The sale features one coin ex my collection. I had bought it a few years ago in one of Frank's sales, and about a year ago, I sold it back to him for about a 17% discount off my original buy price, which I thought was more than fair. I'm curious to see what it'll sell for this time around.

It would have been better to let te sale go undiscussed but it works enough different from the big electronic ones that some things need understanding before new people can see how things used to be. Now the sale is over so we can talk freely. One difference is Frank sells coins he owns and every so often sells one he has sold before. Yours will be an example. My eye was attracted/repulsed by a lot:
154 Same (Thasos stater), F, nrly centered on elongated flan, somewhat crude blobby style, good metal with lt tone.
Ex my 1/01 sale where it realized $170. I had paid $168. Whooppee! Now MB $130

Which struck me as way too much in 2001 and again today so I must be missing something. When the cheap list came out, it had no bids suggesting most people agreed with me. I always find interesting when we see coins declining in price in 17 years. I can't say it declined in value because I can't explain the 2001 number (I would have said $50???) so I wondered what would be the result today. This is wher I come from when I suggest folks study the prices realized and look for signs of good and 'questionable' deals. I pay too much as often as I get a good deal so it all works out. Frank paid too much before the 2001 sale. I wonder how much he paid this time.

I love the hobby but would make a terrible dealer since what attracts me to buy a coin rarely aligns well with the current fads. That does not stop me from being interested in how the other half bids. Several of us indicated an interest in only three to six lots. It will be interesting to see if any of us overlapped on any coin. If you are into the coins as a profession, you will have other sales in the next weeks that will consume your time and interest but those of us who have no real likelihood of buying much before the Spring show season have time to kill dissecting prices realized.
