I recieved this lincoln cent a couple days ago and have not found any like it on the web. Seen a couple close to it but not completely. Would like to know if it looks legit and what it's worth if its legit
Although it might have the 'look' of a filled die error, it's been altered. I can tell from the color of the coin, and the missing design elements, that it's been buffed, and is not a filled die coin. It's an altered/damaged coin - didn't leave the Mint like that. Keep looking......you'll find something soon!
How are you certain of this? I see no buff marks or scratching of any kind. I have alot of coins that look worn down and lime this coins wear and they never been buffed or altered. I'm definitely going to get it checked out.
Im asking these questions and have another one. Even if it had had been buffed, wouldn't you still see some kind of impression on it from the machine or what not. So you must be so coin dealer of sorts? If so where you from and do you look at other people's coins for them, to see if there error coins. I have quite a few wheat cents and other coins I need checked out.
I'm certain - you're probably are not that familiar with a coins's surface, or what an altered surface looks like - I agree that to the novice, it might not look like there are no buffing marks, but those are not natural surfaces at all. It's been 'played' with. No problem questioning what I posted - but it's kinda like being able to tell natural toning from artificial toning, or an original paint job on a car compared to new paint job, etc. ABM147 - thanks for the nice words.
Im sorry I wasn't trying to make it sound like I was being rude or nothing. I'm new to collecting coins and I'm learning new things daily about them. I was asking how you knew to see if you were a coin dealer that knows about error coins so I could have mine looked at. I should have worded it differently and I apologize.
If you post pics and such of your coins here on the forum you will get the best advice on them out there. IMO Fred Is one of the best error folks to come along here in a very long time. He is not just a dealer he knows the ins and outs of the minting process also. You just can't go wrong. And if you post more do not worry if you do not get a quick response sometimes, Most people get an email twice a day with all of the new days threads.
You didn't come off as rude at all - However, because I have a business, I can't look at all of someone's coins, or photos of coins. It just takes too much time, & I hope you understand. Your best bet is to continue to post your finds right here - you'll get plenty of replies, and I'll chime in too when I can...... I'm closing now - see you all on Monday when I get back in my office.
Well if the coins need to be looked at thru a magnifying glass to see the errors, how do I post that? I have a few that need the magnification to see the errors
Depending on how and where you're doing this, it is actually possible you are "dis-learning" or "de-learning" things about them every day. If you have been on YouTube, there's your problem, right there.
No, Fred is THE PRESENT NUMBER ONE (#1) (numero uno) expert on error coins, and what is NOT, in the entire COUNTRY. The American Numismatic Association (BTW, Fred's too modest to say this, so I will.) chose Fred to be one its first Legacy Series interviews, a series of video interviews that will be retained for posterity of the actual GIANTS of numismatics. He is considered by the ANA to be among the all-time greats in numismatics, for valid reasons. True literal greatest of all time types, like Muhammed Ali in boxing. So there's that. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."
Well thank you for answering for Fred. This is great news as I'm about to post a couple coins I just came across today and need the expertise and possible worth of these coins. I have only begun to collect coins and have become fascinated by error coins in general. So the more I can learn the better It'll be for me to find the gems of coins. I've only begun so I'm going to post mostly the wheat cents I have that were once in covers and graded and I think marked as error coins.
