I recently purchased this V Nickel love token off ebay.

Well, it arrived today and I got to looking at it and it's for sure a counterfeit and at one time was gold plated.

I don't know if it was a "Real" racketeer nickel, but someone tried the same scam.

It weighs in at 4.4 grams, about .6 grams to light.

Has anyone ever seen a Counterfeit Love Token? Also, here's info on the [L=Racketeer Nickel]http://numismaticenquirer.com/TNE/Racketeer%20Nickel.html[/L].

Another for the website by pure accident. :)

    Nice love token.
however, what makes you think that it is a racketeer nickel?
Is it reeded or gold plated?
Still love tokens on V-nickels are scarce.
    Nice.

You can still see some of the gold plating around her head. You usually find them with 99% of the gold plating worn off.

    Harrison,

Maybe the person who carved the love token wanted it gold plated after completing it.?. If it was a racketeer nickel wouldn't the area that is carved be devoid of gold?

Nice piece no matter - congrats on the purchase...

can someone explain the reason to destroy a 1883 nickel?

In that time period, pre-1910, it was popular to take current coins, most popular were dimes, and carve initials or themes into the obverse or reverse (more likely) and give them as gifts to those you love (hence: love tokens).

It was so popular that the government outlawed it around 1910 because it was causing a coin shortage.
