I remember filling a cent book back in the 1970's and remember the Redbook showing a 1955 double at near a hundred bucks and thinking I would never ever have that sort of money. Seems I remember saving for something called a "poor mans double" at the time that could be had for a third of the cost..... The short time I been on the forum I noticed how many posts are about potential doubling so I went out and did a bit of Googling as I haven't been much of a cent guy in my later years. When I saw the price graph for a 1972 double I nearly stroked. Made me want to burn all my valued pieces! I can see why this is an exciting realm for collectors.

They need to work on that Wayback machine. Bowers and Ruddy were selling 1955 DDO's for 25c each when they were Empire Coins.

Just think! If Peter charged 50c to every person who thought they had found a doubled die, he'd be a rich man.

That is HARSH. In fact, that might drive away same newbies you’re trying to educate. When one is starting to look at coin hobby, the first thing they go to is the internet and youtube always ends up winning in getting the newbies attention.

While your original post kind of gives the impression you actually want to help them, this one make it sounds like you’re just full of yourself. You’re commenting to newbies in an open forum with the topic “Error Coins”. If I’m not mistaken, this is where people are invited to post to get other people's opinion if what they have could be an error coin. I’ve seen people respond with respect and then there’s some that just poke fun and some are just plain rude.

Ease up on the newbies, if not for them asking questions, yo’d be bored to death waiting for anyone to comment on. They’re NOT idiots for watching youtube, it is the easiest source to get information…bad or not. You would’ve been better off telling them to watch out for some YT videos and ask here on CT for other people’s opinion.

When I first watched YouTube videos regarding coins a while back, I admit, I had doubled die fever. Common sense finally took control of the wheel and I started realizing that it was impossible to have so many of the same variety coins in my small collection. Any little mark or slight "offsetting" of a letter or number, and they'll list it as a valuable coin. It's what finally lead me to this forum. If it's too good to be true.... Unfortunately, common sense isn't very common so they're are a lot of people out there with 7 1955 doubled dies, 3 1944 steel cents, 5 buffalo nickels with a mysterious "f" below the date etc etc... Hopefully your thread will encourage people to do a little more research rather than hoarding a pile of coins they were lead to believe were special by some random YouTube video. As much as I hate to admit it, those videos had me sucked in for a bit.

Very rarely have I seen a true doubled die in the many post on here. When I'm searching, I might find one out of every 250,000 coins searched. Better odds at coin shop finding unidentified doubled dies.

I do buy the more pricey DDOs & DDRs .
But, here in Michigan, we find lots of minor stuff in the change .

You know, I hope, as any academic does reflexively, that using the Internet in this way is just about the dumbest thing ever invented, right?

    Why?

Why are you online on CT (it's on the internet) ? Is this also a trap?
