Attribute This

Does it have a gripped or plain edge? The reason I ask is that I believe it is the 1797 S-121 which has two subvarieties. The rarer, S-121a, has a Plain (actually beaded) edge while the more common S-121b has a Gripped Edge.

I've been known to buy a few if they are moderately cheap.

 

I no longer actively collect them, but appreciate the few I have:

Awesome half cents! I feel like half cents don’t have as many varieties, but are overlooked and worth trying to cherrypick.

 

They don't have as many varieties. A complete business strike variety set (1793 - 1857) is only 99 coins. There are 70 varieties of 1794 large cent alone, 355 varieties for 1793 - 1814. But unless you have SUPER deep pockets you'll never get all 99 of them. The two 1796 varieties and the 1802 C-1 are each at least low five figure varieties.

Just got in new LED lights:

 

It had a reverse of 1795, so it was one of three varieties, S-120, S-121, and NC-1. It had the broken B on the obverse, so it is S-121.

 

It was a busy day yesterday. I picked up several coins for under $50 each.

yep. The 1803s are S-244 and S-265. At least I have the obverse half of the S-264!

ps Do you think the S-154 would qualify for a new Die State IV? Particularly the break from above I down through B and E and back above R on the obverse and the additional buckling down through the upright of R(I) and on the left of the reverse?

 

I thought the first 1803 was probably 265 but I didn't bother to try and confirm it. The large 3 was fairly obvious though.

If it actually has a crack though IBER yes it probably would.

The S-95 should arrive today. I'm still trying to track down my missing fifth coin. I have records for 5, but can only locate 3 with 1 set to arrive today. At least I do have my Gripped Edge S-95. It's ugly, but interesting because of it's edge.

I can't wait to get the S-154 in so I can take better (more focused) shots of the Die Crack to verify it's not just PMD or corrosion. I'll post them when I do.

There also seems to be some small scratches near the edge of the reverse, which look like adjustment marks. Did copper coins have adjustment marks, or just silver/gold ones?
